I've seen this car before (done a bit of work around Leamington Spa), It's the number plate that I recognise!
For what it's worth and if memory serves me well, it looked clean/straight enough and didn't leave a cloud of smoke

Hi, any idea how the reverse issue can be resolved? I don't think it is an issue with the box itself but I have to literally slam the stick to the left with both hands to get it to select reverse?

Hehe! I see you're new to Volvo's? You're problem is with the gear linkage. The most common problem with the S/V40. The replacement part costs around £7 for the front bushes, plus postage. Fitting shouldn't cost no more then a £15 as it's an easy job.

Call 01792790066 which is the number for FRF Motors. Quote "C3" for super-saving discounts and they should have the part out to you within a couple of days. Pop around to your local mechanic and ask him to replace it for you. (hour job tops.)

Hope this helps.

"Drivers wiper arm appears to be the wrong one - it catches on the bonnet when I open it up!"

Make sure that the wiper arm post is not split/broken under the bodywork. It is only a nylon type fitting. If it is broken/split then the wiper arm post will not be in the correct 'upright' position and the arm will contact the bonnet. Been there.

The wiper arms warp over time and start catching the bonnet due to the miniscule clearance between them. Either take it off and jump on it or buy a new one

Thanks for the great advice! is the gear linkage job easy to do at home? I don't mind getting my hands dirty and like to learn how to do things like that.

My arm catches, but the spindle seems to be loose on the carrier.
