Default EGR / Turbo Issues

Hey All,

I was hoping someone might be able to help me in here after being a bit weary about a diagnosis from a garage.

I have a 03 V40D sport, its done about 117k but runs great.

I recently noticed that its dropping a bit of oil not a massive amount at first but has also developed a screaming type noise. If you put the clutch in / take it out of gear and rev it doesnt make that noise. The garage told me i had a split in the metal feed pipe but second opinion from a mechanic and we failed to find the split. The garage refused to change just the pipe as they said the turbo had gone as well and they would need to replace both.

Given that the car doesnt smoke nor use a lot of oil and the turbo doesnt wine i was sceptical so walked away (they also said that the turbo was leaking oil but the only oil i could see was from the feed side)

Anyway a close look by a mate whose a mechanic and it looks like the oil is coming from the egr valve area. Originally it looked like its coming from the valve but after reading through the forum i noticed that a common fault is to leak from the pipe next to it.

My question (apologies for the waffling) is should the be oil coming up the pipe that feeds the egr valve? I need to take a closer look to pinpoint where the oil is coming from but if this is the case is the turbo gone? Or is it normal to get some oil out of the valve? It seems to be coming from near where the plunger is which im guessing means that its travelling up the pipe that attaches to the bottom of the plunger.

Any pointers on how to check if its working as it should be. Im reluctant to spend on a turbo if it isnt the turbo, even more so as the diagnosis thus far hasnt been concrete.

Can anyone help?

Cool

If you have excessive oil residue in/around EGR valve then there is only 2 places from where that oil could be coming from.
1. Crankcase ventilation pipe.
2. Turbo seals/bearings.

to check the turbo, you have to remove a few hoses on the MAF side, AND exhaust pipe by the turbo itself. Then, when there is no air inlet pipe and exhaust pipe connected, check if there is any damage to turbo blades. Then look for any movement of turbo blades themselves. Then hold, lets say, exhaust side turbo blades and try to move air inlet side turbo blades. If they move independently then shaft that connects the two blades are broken( refereed normally as turbo is gone/dead/broken) If that shaft is broken then the whole turbo needs to be removed and replaced with new turbo or just needs to be sent for a reconditioning. If those blades moves as a one(meaning if you move one side, the other side will move as well) then all you need is to check for a shaft movement(check if you can physically move blades little bit to one or the other side). If there isn't any movement or oil leaks from turbo seals then your turbo is fine(but check for cracks around turbo itself).

I know there is a little bit of play in the bearings, not sure if it was lateral or fore / aft if that makes sense. Although no loss of power / lag or even smoking.

When you say turbo seals are these internal to the turbo? And if the seals are gone does this also mean replacement? I was thinking of trading it in if the turbo does need replacing as i dont think it makes sense economically to replace it. Im just hoping i can get it patched up so that i can trade it in.........

Well folks i think the problem is now solved.

Initially we removed the egr valve and cleaned it but there was a lot of oil around that area so finally i gave in an purchased a turbo. At this point the old one had developed a whine as well as a scream. Anyway new turbo fitted, all the strange noises have dissappeared. Just running it gently now to make sure there are no further oil related issues. As part of swapping the turbo out we did a full service and also changed the oild feed and drain pipes.

All in all turbo was £312 delivered with free collection of the old unit.
Oil Feed pipe and seals £85
Oil return pipe £40

Might look at a few minor tuning options now.
