Lower engine mount torque rod

I wasn't sure what state the original mount was in, it wasn't giving me any problems but I have had to change this before on my XC90 and they are a common fault. So I decided to change mine today.

I was surprised when I removed the original and the rubber was still holding on the smaller bush (always this one that breaks), and it did feel like it was about to part company. When tested with the slightest pressure applied the bush rubber broke free from its holding. Perfect timing to change a well known weak part on P2 chassis cars

How many miles on your '09/'10?
I'm on my 3rd V70 and have only changed one of these on Dear Mum's Saab.
How much was that part (if it's not too personal a question)?

mine looked all lovely and clean and I thought, there's going to be nothing wrong with it

took it off, flopped about all over the place, totally useless.. replaced with genuine new one (£60? IIRC) and stuffed some bike inner tube into the gaps to add strength which is an idea I got from one of cheshired5 videos when he was giving a duff one an extra lease of life

My V70 is a 2005 and has done 66,000 miles, the torque mount wasn't completely broken when I removed it but it was just about there, it never took much for the rubber to break when I applied some pressure to it. My XC90 was 2010 with 100,000 and the torque mount was well past its best.

New torque rods are around £60 from Volvo

The new mount doesn't have a void between the metal and centre core so unable to put anything in there, I guess they changed the design recently as the one I fitted to the XC90 still had a void

interesting.. you can get kits to replace the bushes with poly but I'm guessing if it's anything like the top mount that's an ill advised choice

Yes I would expect poly bushes to be a lot harsher

Must be one of the best owner threads I've read on any website. It's a joy to see a car that is often unloved or overlooked get the treatment it deserves.

A lovely spec and a credit to you, sir.

I echo that, even if I envy your lift, 4x4. It's great to see how you care for your P2, and within the constraints of business and family demands I try to do similar for the 2.4T SE that I've owned from new on 1st March 2003 and that now has 191,000 miles under the wheels with a BSR software tune and some hardware mods since January 2005.

When I replaced the lower torque mount for the second time at what must be well over 100,000 miles ago, I replaced just the smaller bush (the one as you say that tends to fail) with a poly one. There is just a tiny increase in vibration at idle, but that's all and I have found it to be a mod worth doing, especially with the hugely increased torque reaction that I subject the powertrain to compared with original spec. I temporarily replaced both bushes with poly ones, but this made sitting in the car like having a dental drill to the head. Very unpleasant in what is a refined and cultured express, not a track day weapon.

Here's a few pics of my wagon that had the lads at the local tyre fitting place in awe as to its condition last month - and taking extra care not to damage the rims (they didn't).

My most recent modification was to replace the mobile phone QI charger in the photo with one that charges at 15W vs 7.5W (which was only enough to keep pace with the power consumption of my smartphone when used as GPS, not to increase battery charge). It also has a proximity switch and motorised arms to hold the phone. Sounds unnecessary and in truth it is, but it's still very slick and satisfying to use. I've taken the opportunity of fitting it to stealth-wire the power supply, too. This entailed removing the air vent plate and making a small cutout in the dashboard soft cell plastic to allow the wire to run out of the vent plate aperture without being cut through chafing with the plate in place.

Yes, I do need to invest in some new chrome wheel nuts after 20 years and 8 months.

Edited to add; please keep your posts coming. It's been great to read the unfolding story and I am sure will remain-so.!

We had a little chat at Glencoe when I saw your car for the first time. Most impressive. I was the one who travelled down to west London for my V70 all thanks to ULEZ. I'm delighted with my car and had two offers to buy it. Not for sale! I got 42mpg round trip from Fife to Glencoe, about 285 miles. See you next time.
