Default New key fob

Hi All,

First post to the forum 
I’m looking for advice on how to get another key fob paired to my 15 plate V70.
I only have one and fear something may go wrong with it…
The main dealer is quoting around £325 for the work which seems quite steep.

Thanks,
Michael

Whether you go through a dealer or a Volvo specialist, I suspect that you'll need a brand new Volvo fob because it also contains the little key that allows the driver's door to be opened manually in the case of an electrical failure such as a flat battery.

This suggests that you're going to be hostage to a bit of Volvo profiteering whatever you do.

If other members know of a cheaper option then that would be good for everyone to know.

How come you only have one fob?

Make sure you ask Volvo to de-program any other keys except your existing one, in case some unscrupulous person still has the other...

To be able to register the fob with the car, you need the new key together with the code sheet it's delivered with. That sheet contains half of the code needed to register it with a certain car. The other half is inside the control unit in the car.

Thus you can never register a used key, since you don't have the code sheet for it.

Volvo always remove keys not present when you register a new one. If you want to add a third one, you need to bring both the original ones, as proof you have them.

My Bro-in-law was in the same situation as you earlier this week. He was getting some work done at the main dealers and as he had only one key for his 2015 V70 asked them about a replacement. He got the same ~£350 quote.

However, someone asked him whether he was with the RAC and had "lost key cover". which he does and has had for 10 years or so. So whilst waiting in the dealers he called the RAC and they said "yep, you are covered" - the RAC man then spoke to the dealer who had already prepared a detailed quote/invoice for him and the RAC guy paid it there and then over the phone.

Result!! New key and fob ordered and he collects it from the dealers on Monday so they can do the programming to the car.

Cost £0. Kudos to the RAC & the dealer for the heads up.

Default Key Fob prices

Hi

My V70 is due to have a new fob next week and the price quoted was £98 + vat for the fob, £85 + vat for the key and about £120 for the software. Without the key, my quote is £249.60 for one fob or £367.80 for two fobs.
By the way, the reason the car is going in is to have both software recalls done.

It just shows how things change. I went to my local Volvo main dealers when I bought a P2 V70 that only had one key. They charged me around the £ 100 plus vat for a new fob and that INCLUDED the programming !

In my old 850, you could just buy a remote and program it into the system yourself. The only requirement was that you had at least one of the original remotes still in your posession.

Yes you need to bring the other keys but the reason is that they are ALL erased and they all have to be added again on later cars .
