Rear Brake Bulb Blowing Frequently. Shed some light? (HELP!)
Seems as though the contact point is blackened and the surrounding plastic melted.
What should I check? What should I do? It eats one new bulb per drive. I hope you can shed light on my issue. Best, Sam V70 2005 P2 Facelift. (((ps. My rear light clusters have the extra LED lights on the side (sidelights) and I'm wondering how to replace the bulb on one side. Haynes manual doesn't cover this and can't find anything online))) |

Most likely causes are either poor quality bulbs (I only use Bosch or genuine Volvo) creating excessive heat or poor contacts/bad wiring creating voltage drop and increased resistance and heat.

Seems the same excessive heat that's causing the blackening on the bulb holder also caused the deformation in the black plastic area into which the bulb is placed.
First things first. If it's eating a bulb per drive, don't put any more in until you get this sorted. There's some very un-good going on. Are you sure you're putting in the right bulb. Double check what you're putting in against the OEM spec and be sure the wattage is the same. Maybe you're drawing too much power / wattage causing this overheating condition. Are you getting that bulb holder back in properly? If not, that might be causing arcing. I know I curse every time I have to change a bulb bc these effin things are just not user-friendly. The engineer of these was a masochist. |

No blackening or melting but I had a similar persistent blowing of a rear bulb until someone told me to replace the one on the other side at the same time - even though it was seemingly good. Problem solved.
Can't remember the reasoning unfortunately but might be worth a try if you just want a quick outcome rather than a troubleshooting marathon. |
