Since taking ownership I've probably put about a £1000 into the car, but the reason I've invested in the car is that it feels like its worth it. Its eye wateringly expensive to run, I'm getting 25 mpg... a friend of mine runs a Merc 6.3 AMG and gets 18, like for like miles. But even so, the car has something. So far its been easy to work on a big plus as i do my own servicing and repairs, its a pretty car, the drivers seat is a wonderful place to be and I feel much happier with my young daughter in the Volvo than I did with her in the Fiat.

The only thing I don't like on mine is the steering lock, I could u-turn a cargo ship faster.

Would I buy another Volvo, yes, but would I buy a new one; no.
I think 'Beefcake's response sums up the dilemma very well and is one with which I fully agree. It reinforces my own view that the owners of older Volvos are more likely to buy another than those of newer ones.

Like 'Beefcake' I run a V70 (mines a 2000) bought two years ago as a 'trade sale' from a dealer for £550. It has since passed two MOTs with only minor rectification, runs well and returns 29.5 MPG overall. It replaced a 745 that I had had for 18 years.

Over the past 34 years, I have owned 13 Volvos, some conconcurrently, and my wife a further 4. So yes I have and would buy another Volvo, but, also like 'Beefcake', not a new one - mainly because I could not afford one, but also because they are more complex with potentially much more to go wrong!

I would say to 'Beefcake' that while 25 MPG is not unreasonable, the car will return more depending upon the usual variables. For those of us who do little annual mileage, specific fuel consumption is rarely a major concern anyway. Coming from a RWD car to the FWD V70, I can only agree regarding the turning radius - the 7s could turn on the proverbial sixpence!

Regards, John.

Default Another one....

I'm on my 4th:

S60 2.0T - nice car, high mileage, no issues
C70 T5 manual - excellent car, sold it on for a handsome profit
S60 T5 manual - excellent car, high mileage, sold it on before it costed me lots
S60 T5 manual - this is going to cost me thousands

There are so many things wrong on the S60 I have had for less than 10 days I am actually thinking of selling it - haven't even taxed it yet. The ABS issue I could have lived with had it been resolved but my mechanic is lost on the issue...

Then the clutch - absolute nightmare for a 75,000 mile, tidy car....

Having seen the nastiness at the posh end of the forum, if I did buy one this would NOT be the place to come for advice and help. And certainly not a mutual exchange of views between grown-ups, as a new user recently discovered. Very, very sad affair indeed.

I've so far had :

2001 S40 T4
2002 V40 T4
2005 S40 T5

Went away from volvo, 3/4 cars for 5 or so years, but came back to Volvo:

2012 C30 D3
2013 V60 D4 (current car)

All of them were great, and I've had different brand cars in between that were ok (special mention to the Mondeo Mk4 I had for 3 years that was brilliant and suited my needs perfectly), but I always feel most at home in a Volvo, so my next car will almost certainly be a volvo again :-).

I've just bought another.

I've had

S40 1.8 XS
C70 Convertible T5 GT
S60 D5 SE Lux
XC60 D5 AWD SE Lux (2012)
XC60 D5 AWD SE Lux NAV (2015)

If I then add my dad's contribution

340 GL
740 GLE
960 GLT

So tend to be fairly brand loyal

Me too! Just bought a 2011 S60 D5 (Gold), and very nice it is.

My '03 S80 got wind of my plan and threw a series of massive wobblies before being run into by a vehicle in the customer parking area of a car dealership! "Ooh, who dented your car?" asked the sales guy...….

Didn't buy my car from them!

Yes I would buy another Volvo
First was a 760 GLE AUTOMATIC 2.3turbo nice car very greedy on fuel
Second was a 940 Turbu Diesel Automatic great car but noisy engine
Third S80 D5 Automatic executive fantastic engine not so comfortable as the 940
still have it ten years later
Also a V40 2.0 t Automatic nice wee car
If the 940 had a D5 engine it would still be on the driveway

I don’t think I will buy another - my current one has been a disaster, and though I like the new models especially the new S60, I don’t expect reliability to be great by the time I’ll be able to afford one - all the fancy toys and touchscreens are bound to go wrong and I fear will cost thousands to fix. I’ll probably look at Toyota, a different kind of car but hopefully a GT86 will be in budget
