This looks like the source of the fire, a short between the wires or connectors there. This is the converter from 6 to12 volts which feeds the tomtom. I don't think that the converter per se caused the problem but a short possibly where all the wires enter through the bulk head. From memory, before I check, i think that it was connected through the ignition switch and on that fuse.

Arcturus;
I'm away from home with only sporadic access, so this is the first opportunity to see your bad news and pictures...first of all I'm SSSSOOOOOO sorry to see this and my heart and condolences go out to you...having said that, my suggestion is to in spect all burned wires...the fact they burned meant they passed excessive current (why...inadvertent short or short to chassis?)so check what the power source was and fuse ratings if any where in place...particularly for add-on converter modules if they're involved...I recall having recommended fusing those (ratings sized appropriate for wiring and loads?) ...remember burnt wires are forensic evidence which will help point back to the root cause and you/we need to understand this well. I will help you in any way I can in this! It always looks terrible after an elec fire, but I recommend you clean that corrosive (if dry chem) extinguisher residue off well and proceed with forensic analysis... Good Hunting, and you're not alone! |

Thanks. Very difficult to distinguish as the fire burnt the wiring.Hard to tell which melting and scorching was caused by shorting and which was burnt in the resultant fire as you can see in my last photo. The good news is that nothing inside the cabin was affected so I don't need to rewire much. Only the wires which came from the regulator and the grey 2.5 from start motor to ignition switch. the main battery lead to start motor and I already have a spare. The damage apart from the hood and engine bay although looking awful is really superficial. The repair cost minimal. It's not a big deal to lift out the engine and strip the bay clean. hardest part, only because it's awkward,difficult to get to the mounting screws in the footwell.Time is not a problem. Life goes on.

Smoking Around.
Was going to start,'Good day',Then I thought,better rephrase that. I am very sorry to hear about your unfortunate 'burn up' You appear to be taking it very well, or is that the traditional,Brit.stiff upper lip?
Anyway,Good luck sorting it, She will live/motor on! maybe even better now she has been 'hotted up a little'? Best Regards,Keith.

Engine bay almost striped out, ready for painting when the paint shop can fit me in. Needs a good clean first. The worse bit is by the vin plate.

Hey George, sorry to see this.
Not easy to tell where the fire did start. Please do a unbolt to every nut and bolt and rivet on the full front. The powder of the extingisher is really corrosive. There will be powder between the wings and the body. Between the front crossmember and the frame rails. Inside the clutch. Behind the flywheel. Between the steering box and the frame rail. At and between every part of the front axle. You have to unbolt every single part and clean it very propper. Even the alu plate and every rubber. If not your beautifully PV will start to rust hard. You won't believe? don't disasemble and let us speak in a few years again ;-) Buy a AFFF Extingisher next time. Expensive, yes. Powder isn't good. good luck, Kay |

I prefer the rear carb as the match of this fire.
Only by a short cut the big red cable from the battery to the starter won't burn. Maybe the rear carb did run to lean and it startet to backfire. The s h i t t y airfilter collects the fuel inside the foam. I never use this kind of filters because of this. Let's talk later about this, good luck, Kay |

Thanks for advice. The filter is wire gauze so i don't think that was the cause. I always run my cars rich. Will clean everything.
