Default XC90 T8 Economy 7 charging

Hi, I have a XC90 arriving in a couple of weeks. I have POD point fitted but don’t know whether to change electric to economy 7. Does anyone know if it’s possible to delay charging until 2 in morning to take advantage of it. I couldn’t see any reference to this in the manual. There is not an option on Podpoint for this.
Thanks in advance

There's a reference to charging timer in the VOC app, so you may be able to.

Carefully calculate whether E7 is actually of benefit to you. It's pretty marginal for us, and I'm charging a full EV, not a hybrid. It's only likely to be worthwhile if you have little day/evening use, have a gas hob and are prepared to load-shift things like laundry and dishwashing onto the E7 rate also.

Otherwise, just make sure you're with a well-priced energy supplier. The big 6 are awful! We're with Bulb, and (shameless plug) if you use a referral link to sign up you'll get £50 credit when you switch: bulb.co.uk/refer/isaac5478

I should add also.... Things are in a bit of a no-mans land at the moment for people trying to switch to E7. No one wants to install old dual-rate meters. SMETS 2 smartmeters are starting to be rolled out, and once you have one of those then it's a simple setting from your provider as to whether you're on E7 or not. Just be aware that E7 is likely to die out in the next few years also, to be replaced by supply/demand pricing.

Thanks, we currently have an E7 meter but pay on a normal non E7 tariff. It would just be case of swapping tariffs not meter.

We’re only a few weeks into T8 ownership but charging is taking 3-5 hours per day, depending on use, and based on our standard big 6 tariff (as determined by our smart meter monitor) only costs 24-25p/hr.

Can someone please explain to me how you can charge the hybrid over night on a timer, I cannot seem to find it in the VOC app, or in car?

Go to range tab in VOC app, click add location (your parking spot) then you can add timers. D76

Being a diligent Volvo household and therefore having a more than average concern about safety we never run the dishwasher, washing machine or charge a mobile phone, overnight.....

Hi there,

We have had E7 since 1992. In our part of Lancs the switching times for E7 are 10.30pm to 12.30am and the 2.30am to 7.30am.

We run the dishwasher when we go to bed before 11.00pm, and the washing machine when we get up at 6am. We use E7 for hot water system in the summer, as this saves multiple cycling of the gas boiler.

The T8 is charged from 10.30pm till midnight then from 3.00am until fully charged. I do this so that some of my early 4.30/5.00am starts are with a fully charged car.

Now then. The XC90 mains charging system draws 10A (which is adjustable downwards on the standard charging module supplied btw). So a good quality 13A plug (13A fuse), cable and adaptor is fine for my “extension cable” from Garage to driveway where the car resides. I use a 13KW digital timer to control switching. House is on RDC as is the Volvo charging module.

The plugs, cable and timer don’t get even warm, as I have used quality items, and have been using this set up for 30 months on my XC90 and 3 years previously on my plug in Prius.

The world has moved on since some people unplugged appliances at night before they went to bed.

Regards

Rojah
