Does this mean there is an oil quality sensor in the pan?
I am still a good 5000 miles off my yearly service, or is it a timing thing?

I've been given 20 litres of 5W30 low saps oil, free. Contemplating using it while I wait for my Liqui moly order to come in from Autodoc.
A little overkill but a flush wouldn't hurt. It's not got any additive.

Annual thing, mine came up about a month before due. Easy to cancel, just can’t remember how. I think you bring up the message then press ok on the stalk.

It will come back the next time you start, of course.
The service message is triggered after a certain distance driven, or a certain time, whichever comes first. Back in the 850 series it was also after a certain number of engine running hours, but I don't know if they still have that parameter too.

They normally work mainly on how many starts, time since last reset, average speed, how many regens etc,

However my Insignia had a life indicator that if I reset it without changing the oil would remain at 0% which makes me think there was something else monitoring the colour of the oil or some sort of complete sorcery that can measure the viscosity.

When I cleared mine, it didn’t come back on for maybe 4 months, until it was serviced. Then reset again I suppose

Well I certainly know it was an oil quality sensor. Dumped the oil and filled with that 5w30, took for a shakedown down the bypass. Quite surprised that for a half hour journey, the oil was black when it came out.

Filter change, and correct 0w30 liquimoly back in... Cleared the reminder. All good.

Interesting you should say about it counting regenerations. It had a very hard journey coming back from Dover, 45mph in 5th. I doubt it wouldn't have done a regen. It came on a few days after to tell me then. That's why I wonder about a quality sensor, the bolted thing in the sump, is that just a level sensor?

But unladen coming back from west Wales, it had a steady shoeing in 6th for about 50 miles. The buildup it had from its hard work definitely got blasted out then!

For the two cars we have, an XC70 D5 from 2012 and an XC70 D4 from 2016, the service indicator is triggered after 12 months or 30000 km, whichever comes first. That's it. No sorcery, no other events counted, no magic.

The later one even shows in the display how much time and distance you have remaining.

That figures. I'd set the service at 180k, was 2000 short. No matter.

I don't think there's an oil quality sensor in the oil pan, but I may be mistaken.

The "book time for maintenance" message just comes up annually (or it does on my car). It usually comes on around a month before the service is actually due.
