Hi, first time post to the forum, just bought v40, 2004 1.8 petrol, got funny rattling sound from top right of engine as viewed from front, intermittent and was told it was vvt solenoid, when disconnected the noise goes away, connect it again and sound comes back, makes sound for few seconds, stops then comes back again. Engine light only came on when disconnected unit. Doesn't seem to affect the engine response but having only just got the car can't really judge, still pretty nippy. Anyway, having been to Volvo, without the car.... now know it's not the vvt solenoid, it's something in a round housing other end of cam shaft housing, anyone know what this might be and how easy/difficult is to replace? Thanks.

It's not normally the solenoid that causes the rattle. It is usually the vvt pulley/sprocket that's the problem.
Disconnecting the solenoid stops the pressurised oil shifting the mechanism in the vvt pulley/sprocket & effectively disables it !

Replacing the sprocket requires a locking tool to lock the camshaft as the sprocket is not keyed to the shaft.
My sprocket was about £140, but that was a few years ago now. I did mine myself & i'm Not sure what the book time for labour is ? but expect it to be 3+ hours if doing the belt as well ?
