Default 130k miles: lifetime expectancy?

Hi
My 2013 XC60 D4 AWD manual diesel (that I love BTW) has been regularly maintained over its life so far, and just about to clock up 130,000 miles. But it's making me nervous: what's the expectation about cars of this age and mileage? I know this is a length-of-a-piece-of-string question, but what kind of major faults can I expect to crop up? Part of this is whether I should change it while the going's good, or continue running it into the ground? I have to say, so far, this car has been terrific and I would be sorry to say goodbye. Any thoughts or experiences?

At 130k and as you say well serviced should go on for another 130k+. You know it and you know it doesn’t have any faults, so your safest bet is keeping it and continuing to maintain it.

If you swap it for something else, you won’t know the history of that, whether it’s well serviced or whether it’s got any long term faults. Very few people sell their car when it’s perfect.

Keep with what you know.

Things will crop-up, naturally. I'd say keep it serviced and use quality parts. Brake discs, tyres and things like that will go in time... that's normal. As for what things you can expect to go wrong, well... that's a tricky one. I wouldn't just going replacing stuff for the sake of replacing it either.

The biggest repairs, I'd suspect like any higher mileage car, would probably be suspension, like control arms and shock absorbers (they aren't cheap, especially when you factor in garage labour costs). Make sure the cam belt is replaced at the correct intervals. EGR and EGR cooler is also another expensive thing that can go bad. As yours is a manual, the clutch won't be cheap.

If you haven't had a cam belt done yet, get it replaced. The other things I've mentioned may not even crop up for years to come, but at 130k, you can expect wear and tear.

Look after it and it'll look after you.

This is a volvo ! you have looked after it well , just carry on for a couple of hundred thousand miles more. using the correct volvo parts for the servicing work. you wont find any wear within the engine , pistons bearings etc...

I generally run my XC60's/XC90's to 180k or until they become unreliable, whichever occurs first. All of them have gone past 180k so far, I've only ever been stranded once and that was a clutch slave cylinder issue on a XC60 which was 18 months old and repaired under warranty. I've just sold an XC60 with 160k on it which in my ownership (since 80k) it's had rear springs and a driver seat heating pad as the only repairs on top of servicing. I sold it earlier than I normally would as I came across a nice XC90 and couldn't justify keeping both.

Your car has the 5-cylinder Volvo engine and M66 gearbox - both bomb proof. If you were going to buy a car to take to 500k+ miles, that would be a prime contender.

I'd say at least half the new members we see on here with "problem cars" are actually "problem garages" or "problem cheap parts". So I'd invest in maintenance, it will cost more, but no where near the cost of trading into a newer car.

That was going to be a question, but gearbox sounds like it's a good 'un. I'd expect to replace the clutch at some point because it's a wear item. It's had springs replaced front and rear in the past 18 months. Shocks, bushes, disks, pads, exhaust -they're all part of normal wear and tear in my view. Interesting that you think OEM parts are not worth it - I'll bear that in mind.
Thanks for the input!

Not sure what I said but I'm in the opposite place - for anything "sacrificial" such as brakes, bearings, filters etc. I only use genuine Volvo.

My XC60 has just past 102k. 98k of that has been in my ownership.

It's the best car I've had. Always Volvo serviced except in 2020 when Volvo decided to to close their workshops during covid!?

However, I'm glad I pay for the extended warranty as I've had over £4k of repairs in the last 2 years that make me worry a little

It's a great car and I'd be happy to keep it longer but I don't want it becoming a money pit after June when the warranty can't be renewed any longer

I actually think the biggest thing that will affect these cars is ULEZ expansions.

Volvo's will soldier on (if maintained) for hundreds of thousands of miles. Yes, things will go wrong, but consider most cars of similar age would already be in the scrap yard by now.

130k is barely "run in".
