Default 2001 V70 2.3 T5 spark plugs

Hi all,

Sorry for the obvious question, I have genuinely searched the forum and have only found more confusion.

I'm just looking to replace my spark plugs, can anyone provide a link for some or a code? I've read some contradictory info on the longer/shorter plugs being in the 2.3/2.4, could anyone help clear this up?

Thanks

Also, I'm doing this to solve a nasty misfire, if this engine has a known coil fault or something then give us a heads up

You ain't kidding about turbo plug confusion....there're are zillions offered.
I sure can't help you because our Volvos have all been the same non-turbo engine with it's dedicated 3-pronger.

Have you pulled any codes from your misfiring car? Even the most basic of code readers can be a help with this job.

P0300 is the code for a general or unspecified misfire.
P0301 designates a misfire in cylinder #1.
P0302 designates a misfire in cylinder #2 and so on to P0305.

Coils can and do fail on any vehicle. Several people have overstated coils' fragility and promote the idea of changing them all if one goes out. I do not agree with that. There is no "know coil fault" beyond the fact that some of them will fail. I was speaking with a big Volvo parts department rep and of coils he said, "We stock 'em and I've never sold one."

Each coil is separate and they're easily removable. Do you do any work yourself? Replacing a coil is not challenging at all. In fact, it's quite easy.

Should you get a P0302 code (for example) you could take the coil from #2 cylinder and swap it with the cylinder #5 coil. Then, after clearing any code, see if the trouble code changes to P0305. This would show that the coil which was on cylinder #2 is indeed bad.

I'm not saying this to dissuade you from changing the spark plugs. Swapping 2 coils is a clean and easy test. In fact, it's a "shallower" included task of changing the spark plugs.
Removing the top cover's small torx screws is easy and you'll see each plug has a coil atop it. A small hold down bolt is all that holds a coil in place.

So there you go. Get your codes read to get a handle on this. If I was closer I'd be right over. Do you do any car work yourself is question #1.

Also; your '01 has a replaceable gas filter down on the frame just ahead of the LR wheel. Has it ever been changed?
I'm not following any misfire flow chart in making this suggestion. It's more of a personal obsession.

The information on this is totally messed up, even some Volvo main dealers have been found to supply the wrong length of plugs.

Personally I have the longer plugs in my 2.4 T5, and from what I found whilst investigating that, I think the 2.3 is supposed to have the shorter ones.

This link shows the exact measurements and thread counts I found on my 2.4 with the longer plugs. I suggest you measure and count the threads on both your existing plugs and the cylinder head in the same way to find out for certain which you should have.

Go to Volvo, give them your reg, buy the plugs, job done.

Do not attempt to use anything other than Volvo plugs, if you cannot afford Volvo plugs just now, cancel your whole plan to change your plugs until you can.

Your car will run worse on new non-Volvo plugs than it will on the old Volvo plugs!

If a nasty mis, I'd first swap a coil pack and see if the mis moves and I'd almost bet it is the coil pack.

I will vouch for that after working on them in all states of dis- repair for decades 👍
