Default D4 to D5?

Hello members!

i have bought an XC60 D4 AWD saturday and i am now waiting for its delivery

when i had to choose between D4 and D5 the sales man could not give me the reason why the D4 is the same engine size than the D5, produce the same torque but has lower HP and KW... i asked him if it is a chipset limitation and he did not replied...

well here are the fact i know:

D4: 5cylinder 2.4l engire
D5: 5cylinder 2.4l engire

can someone confirm my assumption and did someone already tried a trick to get the D5 power from the D4?

thank you guys, i am lessing your comments!

the d4 will be AWD (the normal D4 FWD is only 2.0 not 2.4 this is where the numbering system falls down flat on its face) the D5 will only be FWD.

the usual numbering system is: -
D2 (1.6 8v)
D3 (2.0 between 136-163)
D4 (2.0 again normally - virtually the same as the D3 minus software)
D5 (2.4 with around 205)

now add the confusing elements in:-

the XC60 gets a D4 AWD which is 2.4, if only FWD the D4 is only 2.0, the D5 will only be FWD. (it changes every so slightly every model year from what i have seen)

to add further confusion the V60 has in MY2013: -
a D3 (with 136), D4 (163) and D5 FWD and D5 AWD both of which are 2.4.

if you go back to MY2012 though to add more confusion: -
there was no D4. so you had the D3 with 163 and the two D5's but the D5 actually had lower emissions enough to be a group lower in FWD format.

Really what volvo should do is badge the XC60 2.4 AWD as a D5 AWD it would make far more logical sense.

Hi Ninja

They do!

The XC60 D5 is AWD (all wheel drive) not FWD (front wheel drive)

Regards

EDIT: I will say this though Ninja - it certainly is confusing - even Volvo on their website are stating that the Volvo XC60 D5 All Wheel Drive is......wait for it......Front Wheel Drive....!!....they get it wrong (or maybe a D5 FWD is coming to market as you say..???...!!!)....and they are making them....so how are we mere mortals meant to know!!

yes an absolute shambles , it sounds like a ford man has thought up these crazy engine power range numbers . Swedes are very logical and methodic !

XC60 D4 (163 hp)

Advanced all-aluminium 2.0 litre five-cylinder turbo diesel engines
Superior fuel economy and reduced CO2 emissions with front wheel drive
Remarkable flexibility in all conditions
400 Nm torque
Brake energy charging
Start/Stop technology (manual)
Six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Geartronic automatic

XC60 D5 AWD (215 hp) & XC60 D4 AWD (163hp

All-aluminium high performance 2.4 litre five-cylinder turbo diesel engines
Superior fuel economy
Quick and comfortable response
Sequential twin turbochargers for immense power across the rev range
Start/Stop technology (manual)
Max torque 420 Nm (D4 AWD and D5 AWD manual) or 440 Nm (D5 AWD Geartronic)
D5 AWD: six-speed manual gearbox or six-speed Geartronic automatic with sport mode. D4 AWD: Six-speed Geartronic automatic

1) The XC60 D4 FWD is a 2.0 litre single turbo 5cyl 163bhp

2) The XC60 D4 AWD is a 2.4 litre twin turbo 5cyl 163bhp (detuned D5) with more
torque than the 2.0 litre D4 FWD - probably due to the AWD?

3) The XC60 D5 AWD is 2.4 litre twin turbo 5cyl 215bhp

just to show and yes you are right mate, so confusing my head hurts appears volvo cannot decide.

the volvo UK media site though shows it as AWD. so no FWD i was thinking v60

BUT after much head scratching and searching the D4 2.4 AWD only produces 163hp (the same as the FWD 2.0 version ironically), the 2.4 D5 produces 215...there is the difference.NOTE THIS IS FOR MY2013, MY2012 only had the D3 and D5 (which are the same outputs some emissions changes).

second from bottom is the outputs. D4 AWD, D5 AWD manual and auto.

Volvo are indeed notorious for getting websites wrong! So what hope has the consumer!

Yes the two D4 XC60's (2.0 and 2.4) produce 163bhp, although the 2.4 D4 has more torque than the 2.0 D4 and '50% extra free' on the turbo side of things having two turbos! Probably a 'detuned D5'

When I was buying, I asked if their was intention to produce a D3 AWD (they only did a D3 FWD at the time) and the answer was not 'no' but never..!!

.....then guess what they introduce....??

My first D5 I was expecting 205bhp although got 215bhp (think it was written down as 212 on the paperwork)

I have quite an analytical mind, although after wading through all the differences I need a JD and coke to calm the nerves! What hope has your average quick buyer got to fathom things out!

It was a lot easier (although not a particularly wise decision) buying an Austin Metro in the days!

not a lot though mate 20Nm for the AWD, and ironically the 2.0 has it over a slightly larger band.

Max torque, Nm/rps 400 / 1500 - 2750 Nm / rpm 420 / 1500 - 2500 Nm / rpm

Yeah, although I have no idea what 20nm is in a real life situation! Should I have it or not!!

Seems daft to have more torque over a lower band? Or is there a benefit to this?
