you say the D5 can be nose heavy then suggest a D3/D4?

awkward power band? never really found a problem i do think some of it is down to how you drive in the early days tbh if you drive it normally rather than "fanny" around with it then things tend to be a bit better.

true about the 8 valver but the 6 speed box is much better than the IMHO and if used properly 8 valves does not cause so much issue.

Looking for some advise. I currently have a '53' plate S60 D5 SE that I love but its getting a little tired and to be honest its a little big for what I need.
I've always liked the shape of the C30, practiacility isn't a huge concern & i fancy a change from saloons i've finally decided to start seriously looking at a C30. Because of the miles I cover i need to have a diesel again but my question is....which one? I love the D5 in my S60 but the reviews all state thats its "boomy" and "heavy" in the C30 and the early ones only came as autos. Will the lower power in the 1.6 be noticable or is the 2.0 a better compromise

appologies for all the questions I'm just keen to get some feedback from real world drivers who have spent time in the car rather than just journalists who have had one for an afternoon.

Many thanks

Matt
IIRC correctly the 1.6 D has shorter gearing than the 2.0 and D5 so you may want to check the economy at 75mph if you're on the M-way a lot.

Depends on budget, a never D4 would be better than the D5 on economy and just as quick.

Really down to how fast you want to go You're welcome to come have a passenger ride in my stage 3 T5 ! Then you'll want a D5

Shark has done some D5 tuning and theirs is running at 240bhp....

The D3, overall, is lighter than the D5, and I've driven both and I certainly felt a difference.

As for the power band, yeah, the 2.0 4cyl's seems narrow compared the the more modern 5cyl ones, it's not BAD per se, but it certainly shows it's weaknesses compared to the others.

We agree to agree on the 8 valver, :P The boost is turned up quite high to compensate for the engines own lackings in power, obviously it was madethis way with efficiency in mind, but I just thought it was worth mentioning that if he went for it then decided he wanted a tad more poke with a remap (usually a good gain in bhp/torque on a turbo oil burner as I'm sure you know) he'd end up dissapointed.

Got to be the D5 for me. I did look at 2.0s but it would have bugged me knowing it wasn't as fast as it could have been. I know people say the D4 is the same power, but I can't escape the fact a 2.0 is having to work a bit harder to produce the same go, where as the D5 is a pretty lazy lump at 180bhp. I'm getting around 41.5mpg from mine not being gentle with it and quite a few short runs,

I've not noticed it being nose heavy but I'm driving the M6 not the Nurburgring, and personally I love the exhaust note for a Derv.

You already know the D5 from your S60, you know it makes sense!

I have the 1.6 drive 16valve 2010 and bought it because I thought matched with the 5 speed box it was better than the 2.0d. Had an Alfa 156 with the 5 cylinder 2.4 diesel which in that car was brilliant - don't know if it's exactly the same unit. 1.6 goes surprisingly well and is engaging to drive - haven't regretted it.

the D3/D5 engine and gearbox are mechanicaly almost identical except for a crankshaft with shorter stroke so same weight up front anyway .. its all alloy and same weight as 2.0D as the 2.0 D is cast iron .
