D5 Manual Gearbox
Hi, I am very close to ordering a new v50, I will definately go down the diesel route and am extremely tempted by the D5 SE, but I'm struggling to justify the additional cost over the 2.0D SE.
I would appreciate anyones thoughts on this little teaser. Also does anyone know when the D5 will be available in manual form hopefully reducing this price difference. Thanks for all advice. |

The V50 D5 will be avaliable with a manual box either right at the end of this year, or the first month of next year.
The D5 is a lot quicker than the 2.0D, smoother too. That said, the 2.0D is a nice car to drive and is well matched to the car and the gearbox. The D5 is likely to be more economical too, despite the massive extra power it has.

Thanks for the help I think I'll be waiting a short time for the manual then. I'll email Volvo to see if they're in a position to enlighten me.

Hope so - my 2.0D has averaged just over 30mpg in the first 12 months (actual fuel used, not computer calculation)

mY S40 2.0d Averages a fraction under 50MPG, with a mix of town, rural, and dual carriageway use (about 1800 to 2000 miles per month). On a round trip to Worcestershire on Monday, round trip of 310 miles, mostly dual carriageway and motorway (A11, A14, M6, M42 etc), morning rush hour, afternoon quieter, average speed 62mph overall, REAL fuel consumption 52mpg. This is with a Diesel Tuning box fitted as well, 165bhp or thereabouts.

Over a 9000 mile period, I have averaged 33.6mpg. In fairness :
1) Less than 50% of that distance will have been on motorways. 2) I haven't been going out of my way to achieve good fuel economy, other than through mechanical sympathy. 3) It's an improvement of 10mpg over my last car.
