Default proud new owner of a 460 GLE... :o)

Hi.. I'm new here (I usually post in the 900's forum)... I've got got myself an excellent 1991(J) 460, it really is a good un... a few very minor issues but nothing to worry about... I got it to run whilst I SORN my S90 Executive II and start bringing up to it's former glory...

after a small issue of my new purchase breaking down after only 50 miles of me picking it up it seems a fantastic car for it's 20 years of motoring, just over 90k miles on the clock (varified with past MOT's)... a new Dizzy cap, rotor arm and a set of plugs saw it run PERFECT with ZERO CO2 & a respectable 36ppm HC...

all it needs is the O/S/R central locking fixing and a very small amount of rust starting to bubble the paint on the rear arches... I've had it on the ramp and there was about 8 of us under there & we were all stunned on how clean it was for a 20yr old motor...

what I would like to do it try and get rid of the DIM DIP, the brown lights look crap, I'd prefer them ON or OFF, not inbetween... any ideas how I can do this, I've heard there's a Dim Dip relay or Resistor but as I've only ever owned 360's, 940's 960's & my S90 I'm not too familiar with the 400's wiring... also I'd like to swap the orange front indicators for clear ones, are there any that will fit as I assume the facelift are totally different...

thanks Jim... I had a look at 'Club 480' but it didn't tell me anything as that site is for 480's and the wiring is different, not much but as the 480 didn't have the DimDip like the 440/460... I'm sure there's a resistor somewhere...

Nice to see another J reg 460 on here. There is a small black box located behind the passenger side headlight that I think controls the dim/dip function. The clear indicators were fitted to the facelifted cars L- P reg and will fit the earler cars but only after you have replaced the headlights and front wings as the clear indicators fitted are a lot smaller ! I suppose an easer way would be to make your own clear ones by modifying a pair of standard ones. Another thing that I found out is that the headlights on an early 460 are different to a 440 as I had the seriously rebuild one of mine for last years MOT.

thanks for that Dave... I have already sorted the Dim Dip issue, I've disconnected one of the wires behind the main switch... so now it's OFF/Park/Headlights... no more horrible brown dim dip and rear lights on during the day...

I got this 2 weeks ago and all I've done is replace the rotor arm, dizzy cap & plugs... all but 2 of the dash lights were blown, even the switch lights, heater control, clock illumination etc didn't work.. but all is good with the car now... there's a little surface rust coming on the rear arches which a friend who has a body shop is going to sort for me...

apart from the arches the car is almost perfect, I'm not sure if the wheels are factory fit or not, they don't have Volvo cast into them, but they do have 'Fortuna' cast in them... other than that she is as she rolled out the factory, I night even take it to a VOC meet one day...
