You could even power the solenoid from a battery and listen for clicking in the box. This does not require opening the gearbox.

If these things test out OK I'd check the wiring from the ECU to the gearbox.

I would think some DIY time spent investigating would be worthwhile.
ok, ive identified the wire to the solenoid, on the mulit meter i conect the probe to the wire, does the other probe go to earth, i dont know anything about multimeters?? got a digital one? i know i have to measure the resistance from the solonoid, is this with thr ignition on, power to the solonoid??
