My '02 170bhp Petrol with an auto box gets about 28mpg around town, a smidge over 30mpg on a rural commute, can get 35+ on a motorway run.

Very good, but not as good as a euro 3 would be (plus there's no swirl flaps or DPF to worry about in the euro 3).

A 140 bhp petrol which we've had is not too bad around town but the 2.5T auto we now have is appalling - about 16 mpg. Just as well we mainly use it on long runs out of London.

Just been to Cambridge and back, and Brighton and back on a full
£80 tank and it's still showing 200 miles to go but was mainly keeping speeds at 70 and below.

I wouldn't buy a diesel - never had one!

2006 XC70 D5.We have just completed a 500 mile round trip, mostly A roads and motorways and when I worked it out we got 36.8 MPG. That was me and the missus and 2 grandkids plus a couple of overnight bags. I must admit I was expecting around 40 ish MPG but we got the swirl flaps and all the fancy emision stuff that goes with it.

I'd agree with this. If I do a long run on the continent (little traffic and keep rolling) I can get above 35 mpg on the motorway, especially if I keep the Revs around 2100-2200 and use cruise control (helps a LOT). Probably around 65mph; but probably creeps up so uses more and the mpg drops; but I want to get somewhere on a long trip so time/money and all that

Hopeful that my XC90 D5 will improve on that figure.

Top tip, if it's not out of your way always go through Luxembourg to get your fuel and away from the motorway of course.

It all very much varies depending where you live and what your normal commute is like

20-23 urban is quite normal https://www.volvoforums.org.uk/showthread.php?t=120913

I get about 21-22 on average because I live near london and it's traffic lights and speed bumps everywhere (and when I do get a chance to move I don't dawdle lol) .. if your 'about town' is long constantly moving flowing roads with the occasional stop then obviously it will be more like mid to high 20's

on the flip side though being close to work means my journeys are shorter anyway so weekly it costs me about £25 in petrol. If I lived out in the sticks and travelled 45mins each way to work I'd get better MPG but the bill would still be higher.. so swings and roundabouts I guess

you can't say 'how many mpg does this car get' because it's not a straight forward answer

if you ask that question then give details of your daily commute, the area you live in, and your driving style, we can make a half decent guess

and keep the tyres pumped up hard it makes a good 3-4mpg difference on mine

what that tells me is your 'around town' is only slightly slower moving than 'rural' because the numbers are so similar

Default Semi Rural

Yeap I’m certainly semi-rural with not much traffic or stop-start junctions.
