Similar case in point, a car was put into a garage with an intermittent window fault and the owner advised the garage it was almost certainly the fusebox in need of being resoldered. The garage didn't listen and diagnosed a part that rarely, if ever, fails. They pulled this out and resoldered it, causing a fatal fault on it. They also disconnected the battery with the keys in the ignition, locking the immobiliser out permanently. Result - completely dead car!

Dave that sounds a real nightmare.
It's all fixed. Timing was off. Car is smoother when starting and more quiet. FYI for anyone in the future. Set piston 1 to Top dead centre (TDC) put dog dish fly wheel on so the missing holes on the edge are in line with where the starter motor is. Thanks all. |

It is a common mistake.
Rule 1 - check the positioning of the part before removal Rule 2 - fit new part in the same position as original Rule 3 - when you failed to do the basics Forums/groups and experts will normally be able to help I knew when I first replied to your post on FB that they would almost certainly have made that common mistake |

To add injury to insult, the car and owner are in New Zealand, he's a British ex-pat and his brother has just died back in the UK! The only glimmer of hope is that a complete replacement set of ECUs including the fob has been sourced in the UK for him so when he comes home for the "arrangements" he can collect the bits necessary to fix his car. Thanks for the clarification on the dog-dish install, hopefully it will help someone else in the future!
