Just done the first Sump suck, used this;

Very easy job, the oil gets sucked into the sealed container that has graduations on the side. Pumped out 3 litres which came out very easily, just got to make sure the pipe doesn't kink if the oil is hot. Can then pour the used oil away into a container without any mess. Used a funnel and a 2 litre plastic measuring jug to refill with fresh oil. took around 25 minutes in all.
I did get a 12v pump from Lidl, but think the above method is just as easy without any mess. Only another 5 to go !

You do know that the gearbox will pump the oil out for you? Just search for the "Gibbons Method" which is actually almost the same as the official Volvo method.

This method will give you a full flush using about 10lt of oil.

Not a good idea with higher mileage boxes! Much better to do 3 or 4 part-changes/sump-dumps a few hundred miles apart then one a year to keep the oil in good condition. Also less wasteful on ATF than the flushing method/Gibbon method/Volvo method. Don't forget the "official" Volvo/Gibbon/flushing methods were designed for NEW CARS, not cars with 100k+ miles under their wheels!

These pumps are a lot less labour intensive and leave you free to do other tasks while the gearbox fluid is emptied.

Be that at it may, I performed the procedure on my car at 110k then again at 160k with no problems and a noticeable improvement in the gear changes.

My point is that the car will do the pumping out. If you choose to only swap 3ltr at a time you can, and you don't need to use a separate pump. The only labour required is to remove the return line from the oil cooler (push fit - no tools) and push a tube in its place.

And why would you need to do this to a NEW CAR?

It's recommended on a new car to keep the fluid clean but it's starting off clean, hasn't been neglected in terms of regular changes and has minimal dust from the brake bands.

Older cars will have older seals that have dried up through lack of maintenance and fresh oil - if you read my post i said don't use the flushing method on older cars. If a new car has always been maintained and regular fluid changes have been carried out, there shouldn't, in theory at least, need the extra care of doing the part-change/sump-dump method.

Actually, Volvo do not recommend changing the fluid at all. Except cars used for towing and/or taxi work.
