Default How to Read system errors using driver controls

I've been told by my dealer that engine or other system errors may be read (possibly not in full detail) by switching ignition on and using combination of "Read" button, front fog switch, and possibly rear fog light switch.

Only problem is that I can't remember what the combination is and in what order to turn everything on..

Does anyone know?

Yup, it is possible, but you§ll only get a short answer of whether a DTC is logged by that modul or not, no codes though.

Here's the procedure>
- Turn your ignition to II, but don't start the car.
- Hold the "read" button on your turn signal stalk
- Press the rear foglight switch twice /should be two quick succesive presses/ if you don't succeed the first time just let go of the read button then press again.
- Look at your trip comp .
- Keep pressing "read" for each module to display either "No DTC found" or "DTC in VIECHLE"

BCM (Brake Control Module)
DEM (Differential Electronics Module - AWD)
ECM (Engine Control Module)
SWM (Steering Wheel Module) (probably only if DSTC)
EPS (Electrical Power Steering)
CEM (Central Electronic Module)
SRS (Supplemental Restraint System)
CCM (Climate Control Module)
DDM (Driver Door Module)
ICM (Infotainment Control Module)
PDM (Passenger Door Module)

Thanks Guru.
I knew the read button and fog light switch were involved. But just couldn't remember detail.

I just tried this in my 2004 2.0d Kinetic, and I do get some information, but for each module I get 'checking', 'DTC set', or 'Ready'. I can imagine what the last two mean, but what does the first one indicate?

Also, I found that I had to got different items when I tried another time. I even had a module not listed in your list: "DIM Ready" was one of the items.

I even crashed the system once, having the display freezed at "PDM DTC SET". It did not disappear when I took the key from the car and put it back in. Only starting the procedure again cleared the display in the end.

So, apparently, thsi feature is not very stable ...

Yes Bikeman, it's not perfect and some modules show "checking" and only that, it's useless to wait for it to actually "check" like i did because it just sticks there until you press "read" and then it moves on.

DIM is Driver Information Module.

For a list of all module acronyms + code deciphering DOWNLOAD this PDF and start from page 11.

If you really want to, you could get a BSR PPC code reader and deleter from here

Is this still valid?

I seem to get "SET" quite a few times plus lots of acronyms not listed here.

EDIT: Just noticed this isn't for XC90, can anyone supply the relevant info for a 2007 Exec?
