Default 1.6D engines

There has been a couple of threads re 1.6 D engines recently, but my question to everyone is simple; has the 1.6D engine changed much or at all, since it introduced by Volvo a couple of years ago.

I think I've read that the first 1.6Ds had emmissions of 132g/km wheras the newer Drive engines are at either 118g/km or 104g/km for the stop start.

Is this new found economy as a result of just new engine management, injectors or a complete redesign of the engine with all new parts?

If the engine is completely new, is it much more reliable, fixing any known faults that the early one had?

Finally, if the engine is new(partly or complete) when was it introduced, would you get an old engine if a new car was ordered now?
