Yes, you're right- it is one unit. My question may have been misleading- when I said transfer fluid I meant rear case/diff fluid..

So Clan, you’re saying transfer case is a “no maintenance” item yet AT should have the fluid changed periodically, correct?
Indeed yes , The vast majority of auto boxes are fine without an oil change , with car ownership lasting about 3 years no one thinks about paying out to have it done as a service item , it could double the cost of the service ,, but if you plan on keeping the car a long time best to get it done periodically , 36000 miles in tough conditions or 54000 general driving around .The angle gear is a simple gear and 4 bearings and as I said many times , volvo used the highest quality synthetic oil in their final drives which has proven over the last 20 years to be very satisfactory indeed unless it leaks out which is very rare ..

The old service sheets disappeared about 3 years ago , now they are generated individually for each car through vida , the "service adviser" should talk to you and ask about brake fluid , automatic fluid , and if you do low mileage tailor it to suit your needs . Previously you would have been given a signed service sheet with everything listed , and that is still the case ..

Crystal clear- thanks once again!

Yeah, no service sheet- and unless one asks- no verbal advice either.. But then again- this is not a Volvo-only trend- it has become a norm..

With such advanced monitoring systems onboard one would expect to be able to click on the "Maintenance required" message to get a list of scheduled maintenance items..

That's wrong , part of their process is to give you without asking the ticked signed service sheet !

There is on board monitoring now with wi-fi that sends details back to the dealer including fault codes , but not fully operational yet although the cars have had the wi-fi for several years now .
