Newbe just bought xc90 and may have autobox problem
Hi.
I have just driven home from buying my 2005 2.4 xc90 auto. 120,000 miles. Whilst driving I noticed that when accelerating the revs would climb then drop then pick up again. I am sure it wasn't changing gear it was almost like it was slipping whilst in a gear. After the 250 mile drive home I came to a roundabout and when pulling off from being stationary the car seemed hesitant to move and it was as if it was starting in 2nd or 3rd gear. As a new owner I am at a loss so any advice would be very helpful. Thanks in advance. |

Have you driven an automatic before? At first, it does feel as if the clutch is permanently slipping - you do get used to it. The revs will rise and fall as the box goes through the gears.
Check that the button next to the gear shift (marked W) is not lit. That is for driving on snow (Winter) and it does set off in 2nd or 3rd, to stop wheel spin.

Hi.
Yes I have driven some autos before, but I do know what you mean, if it is some sort of fault it feels that it may not yet have fully developed. The w is not lit. ( unless the bulb has gone) Thanks for your reply. |

It's slippping so best choice would be to return the car. May also try replacing some of the fluid, or top it if it seems low. Google up how to do these depending on the transmission

Hi, you car will be very good at reporting errors, do you have any warning lights, especially transmission. Have you any messages on the lower left of the dash and is there any warning light in centre of display console (Amber or red triangles with explanation mark.)
If there is none then your car is probably OK and you just need to get used to the auto gearbox. If there are any lights or warnings, you need to get them read. If you have transmission errors literally displayed, you may have real problems, but get them read, preferably with vida diagnostics and start from there. It will be helpful to try and locate an independent volvo specialist in your area.. Hope this helps Last edited by john langrick; Dec 14th, 2018 at 09:23. |

Welcome to the forum....
With regard to setting off - this is a known irritation with the XC90, if you google "geartronic delay" you will be able to read about other peoples experiences. Keep in mind that your '05 car was one of the earlier diesels to get an auto box and at that stage of things using a gearbox that was mainly designed for petrol cars with twice the rev range on a large diesel car with a single turbo (i.e. some lag) meant some compromises. With regard to the flaring - sometimes this can be normal behavior and is down to how the gearbox applies torque converter lock in 3rd and 4th gear. Be aware that the gearbox changes it's shift parameters according to your driving behavior- both over time and an in instant. If you accelerate from 40 to 60 by gently pressing the throttle to the floor over the space of a second and then repeat the test be stamping (literally) on it you will see what I mean... Unless you know it's been done a gearbox oil change is a really good idea and whilst it may not fix all issues, you will notice improvements in smoothness and manners. Do you have the 163 BHP engine with 5-speed box or 185 BHP engine with 6 speed? Easy to tell - if the plastic cover on the top of your engine is all black then you have the 163.

I experienced some flaring the other day in 3rd and 4th on a cold gearbox.

Good point well made - the shift points are raised and torque converter lockup altered until the gearbox fluid reaches operating themperature, this is to ensure it does that (and the engine) as quickly as possible.
