Nice review Wibblebum. Thanks.

Great looking cars. Wish I had one!

Am I right to be shocked at the MPG?

My '09 XC70 D5 auto AWD will do 36mpg all day. Seems incredibly poor for a modern diesel. I would have hoped for something in the 40's.

Cancelling route guidance on these models requires "Cancel Itinerary". Why not "Cancel Route"? Lord knows.

Heating adjustment just requires "Temperature 20" or "I'm cold/hot" whichever you require. This changes set heat on both sides and if the passenger wants a different temperature they can use the screen without altering that set by the driver. Fastest way to alter on the screen is to tap the big plus or minus.
Set a 'Home' position in navigation and then "Take me Home" navigates you back home from wherever you are. "Navigate to [postcode and/or town and street" gets you there. You may have to choose a number from a list that pops up on the dash.

Once you learn to use voice and the steering wheel buttons, there really is no need to look at the Sensus screen much at all and I often switch it off. If you have the 12" driver's display, even the map appears in the centre of it and if you have head-up display, even better, the turns come up on the windscreen.

Are you a particularly aggressive accelerator and braker? My XC90 D5 started off at around 32 with 38 when gently driven. It improved progressively as miles piled on to easily achieve a normal 38mpg with 42 regularly hit and bettered on longer runs in moving but heavy traffic, sort of 'normal' road conditions. This was only after the first 15,000 miles or so.
If it's anything like the Audi Q7 I had, that improved all the way up to 45,000 miles or so. Starting off when new on a tidy run with 26mpg and ending up by the time it passed 50,000 miles easily achieving 32mpg [compared to similar driving in the Volvo getting 42mpg]

I've little doubt that driven sympathetically but not slowly, you should easily hit 45mpg by the time you've driven 15,000 miles or more. Wouldn't be surprised if 50mpg was a regular occurrence. My 160hp 4wd automatic Honda diesel has averaged nearly 49mpg over the last 300 miles. It can reduce to 42 when driven harder though. It has 35,000 miles on the clock.
