To restore a little hope to the OP, "roadside assistance suggested that it looks as though the timing belt and water pump have gone." might mean that it only looked that way and that the belt actually hadn't gone and just the pump had failed, but if the belt had snapped, there's nothing to prevent the valves coming to a standstill with the open ones being battered by the rising pistons. Worst case scenario would be at least a couple of pistons, valves and con rods and it could go as far as a detached valve head destroying a cylinder and/or damage to the camshaft and its bearings. Oh, I hope it's just a water pump!
