Default Valve Guide replacement

Hi,
I am getting some symptoms of valve guides requiring replacement. My car has done 154000miles, I am not sure if its worth doing. Can anyone suggest a Volvo friendly garage or mechanic who could give me a price for it? I am in Manchester. Or is it something I could tackle at home? Is their a guide on how to do it anywhere? Regards Eric

Can’t help much with the actual job but can recommend two good Volvo independent specialists Manchester way having used both myself.

Trevor Burgess in Hyde and Hallmark Volvo in Stockport.

Hope that helps.

Cheers,

Chunk

Are you sure? It is not a job I have heard of being necessary before, especially at only 154k

i agree with gmonag - what are the symptoms you have that makes you think you have worn valve guides?

I'm guessing smoke on the overrun

Could be turbo seals??

Cheers

The symptoms are basically burning some oil but not all the time, if the car is decelerating then it usually bursts a blue smoke just as you put foot on accelerator. I am using about a pint of oil a month ish. It doesn't burn on hard acceleration. There doesn't appear to be any oil leaks at all. I have a white stone drive and in 9 years its never spilt a drop.
Interesting it could be turbo seals? Is there a definitive way to diagnose the issue? Thanks for your help.

Hi, I had those symptoms on a previous D5 engined Volvo ... it turned out to be the valve stem seals on cylinder 4 that was allowing the oil into the cylinder on over-run, then blew blue smoke out when you accelerated .... the seals were pennies ... the big cost was the cylinder head gasket etc as the head required to come off to replace them.

One more possible cause of your issue.

Hope it helps

If the turbo seals are leaking there will be oil in the air charge pipe, if it is the valve stem seals, there will not.

There is always oil mist in the turbo pipes , It is oil mist condensing from the breather ..
