Default Real life fuel consumption for S60 / V60 D4?

Hi everyone, new to the forum as I'm looking at possibly getting an S60 or V60 as my new commuting vehicle. Currently driving a Tdi Golf which suits me ok on my commute along the M4 every day (50 miles each way), but I'd like something more comfortable and hopefully the same / better economy wise.

I'm obviously looking at the D4 (most likely auto), so my question is what real life returns people are people getting for motorway / A road style driving?

My current Golf returns a long term average of 54Mpg, which is not too bad compared to 67Mpg claimed for extra-urban (60Mpg combined). If the S60 is quoted at 74Mpg combined, can I hope to get closer to 60Mpg in real world do you think?

Many thanks!

I am sure that at some point an owner will reply but based on knowledge of what people with these cars have mentioned before on this site I would suggest 60mpg is unlikely for day to day driving. If you can match your Golf figures then that would be more realistic and achievable. You may get 60mpg by driving in an eco fashion but you asked for real world figures.

Volvo are not good for the discrepancy between reported and real world mpg.

There are some good posters on here with V60 D4 engines so if you have patience then they will reply.

Welcome

how have you calculated your 54mpg? If this is taken from the onboard computer then it could be rather inaccurate. Experience from this and other fora would suggest that onboard trip computers are up to 10% optimistic in their figures. (my own car is 3% optimistic).

If you are measuring brim to brim, or using Fuelly (uses brim to brim calcs) then you will be pretty well spot on

Welcome to the forum, hope you find the info useful.

I've got a V60 D4 geartronic, done just short of 9,000 miles since March and current actual mpg is 52-53mpg based on all manner of use. I was expecting around 50 so I'm slightly up on that. Some tanks are mid-low 40s if mostly around town (current tank has been almost all that sort of use and expecting the lifetime average to take a hit), long motorway cruises nearer the 60mpg number. But I would say that expecting 50 is realistic, expecting 60 is possible but would take serious effort and cautious driving. The engine is a peach, provides great returns for hauling a heavy estate around, but is fragile if you go chasing the higher economy. A lot of my miles are over lots of hills and I do notice quite a jump over long flat runs so you may have a better experience.

Out of every thousand miles so far I've been around 600 cruising on motorways or A roads, and 400 around town or on short hops. I thought my numbers were more like 800/200 but turns out I do far more short stuff than expected.

When you take a step back and think about it, over 50mpg in real-world driving conditions from a full-size, 1600kg, 180bhp automatic that can do over 130mph is pretty amazing, really.

Agreed. The disappointment comes from the teaser of exhorbitant fuel economy that is unrealistic. When you look at the situation how you describe it then you sit back and think, yes that is impressive. It is all about managing expectations and at the moment car companies are not doing this very well.

My avarage fuel consumption is 6 lt/100 km. But if i drive calmly, it decreases to 4.5 lt/100 km.

They were supposed to have the same fuel economy but: 2017 S60 D4 auto: 53mpg uk
My old 2012 Honda Civic 2.2 dtec man: 56mpg uk
Still its pretty good for a bigger car.

I drive mostly highway.

Thumbs up

1500km using 67 litres measured brim to brim, volvo v60 D4 2014 170,000 miles giving real life 63mpg.
Mostly around 65mph driving from Barcelona to Essex avoiding all toll roads except for Dartford crossing. Have managed 68mpg Essex to Cornwall with a tail wind.
