Default Current prices of T4s

Hello all,

I used to a member of this forum quite a few years ago. Since then I swapped to mk2 focus ST, however, there's just something about this particular year(s) of volvo which I love... Anyway.

I am currently looking at a 2002 v40 T4, has 157k on the clock with a full service history. The dealer is asking for £1500 but open to offers. Knowing how hard they are to come by, would you guys say this is a reasonable price? In all fairness, the condition is quite good from what I can tell. The only thing putting me off is the mileage as I would probably want it to be my daily. Any input is appreciated.

Thats a good price if it is in working order and well looked after, i had one that i used daily and it had 166k and it worked like new, my turbo went about 163k so watch out for that, but i don’t know if that was my bad luck. If he's open to offers try and wiggle him down, and look for the usual timing belt and water pump was last changed etc. Look at the buying a v/s40 thread.

But some of the more well known members will help.

Thanks for the info, how much was that turbo replacement or did you do it yourself?

I bought mine for 600 quid about 2 and a half years ago, a steal at the time, I have however spent at least the asking price of the one you're looking at on mine since then, if not more, though this was down to my own stupidity really, winding the boost up is all fun and games until it breaks bits, I always knew that I could go and buy a sorted one for less than it would cost to fix mine, but then it wouldn't be my car would it, at least I know mines mechanically sound for a good while now.

Provided the one you're looking at has been serviced religiously, particularly regular oil changes and timing belt etc, then you shouldn't go far wrong.

I'd part with 1500 easily if it satisfied the requirements as far as being well looked after goes as said above. If they threw in a year's MOT that would be even better...

Appreciate the input guys. He's stated the water pump and timing belt was done at 140k and I've asked him if it's been recently serviced. I will probably take the plunge to go view it. It's about an hour and half away, hopefully it doesn't disappoint!

I know what you mean about this year of Volvo

I've got a silver 2001 S40 T4 with 139000 miles and still going strong.

I have had it up for sale a couple of times, and each time removed it from sale after driving her for a couple of days.

I think its the simplicity of this year S40 that I love coupled with out of the box handling characteristics that would show up more modern cars.

And the case of the T4 the sheer standard power/torque it has coupled with low overall weight.

My 2007 S60 T5 has a stage 3 BSR tune and although an animal to drive still doesn't make me smile as much as my T4.

As others have said, regular engine oil and filter changes are key to engine/turbo longevity.

One thing I did to both my T4 and T5 was fit a magnetic gold plug to the engine sump, just for peace of mind.

I've been a vehicle tech for a long time and anything that really helps with maintainence is good with me.

If it's the one I'm thinking of, few initial comments....

I can see it's got an aftermarket exhaust (gen T4 ones are oval shape). I'd want to make sure this isn't a cheap quick fit jobby if the whole system has been replaced - T4's are sensitive to back pressure and a cheap one isn't going to do it much good.

Few haggle points, center piece on the front splitter is missing and both headlight wipers are missing. There's also a good chance the motors inside the headlight wiper units don't work either (got through 3 sets on my T4 back in the day) - £100 plus each new and second hand may be hard to come by now, pretty sure that's an MOT failure too? (if it's on the car it has to work? - Happy to be proven wrong ).

Listen for a ticking noise on startup, exhaust manifold bolts come undone a lot on this model, easy fix.

As mentioned above, my turbo also gave up around that mileage so check service history, second hand ones are hard to come by and not much else fits these unless you go the modified route. I paid £1200 for mine fitted by Volvo back in the day.

It looks a nice car though, worth a view if nothing else, they are an absolute hoot to drive (still miss mine!).

EDIT: MOT is up June 2nd - Alarm bells ringing a bit, especially if they insist on MOT'ing it themselves....

That is the one indeed. It's also been reduced by £150 and its only been up a week or two I believe. I noticed the missing wipers too, I didn't know it was an MOT failure though. I will be going to view it. The mileage still worries me, it would be just my luck buying it for the turbo just to go out at 160k. I'll probably start with a silly offer then go from there.
