45mpg is a good step up to what i have at the moment, one car manages about 20-25 mpg combined with cruise control on and the other gets 25-30 mpg combined.

so 45mpg is cracking i recon, dont need a turbo as one car has 2 and if i want some weekend fun with out the expense then a 2.0 v6 is right there. me and the miss's are looking at buying a house in the next few months and i promised her we would get a good reliable workhorse / family car and we both like the v40 estate. Plus when the miss's finally pass's her test i want something she wont feal intimidated to drive.

She'd secretly enjoy a drive and not tell you

If MPG is a priority, go for the diesel.

lol she will be getting her own fast car when she is ready, she really wants a RX7 FD lol.

I dont mind getting a petrol or a deisel, as long as the car is right and at the right price and most of the good desiels are out of my price range, we are struggling to hit the 2k mark. Finance is not an option neither is a loan.

2k will get you a top of the range 1.8 petrol. Your budget is plenty and I paid £1300 for my 1.8 52 S40
