Must carry a lot of stuff around with you. I'm quite happy to bung a spare into that thing called the wheel well. The can of gunk was no use to me a couple of days ago on the M62 when some road debris took out my near side front tyre.

Space saver every day. If you live in the remoter areas of the UK, mobile reception is never guaranteed, so calling the breakdown services may be impossible. The only alternative to a space saver is fitting run-flats, but they have their issues.

Space saver, run-flats, tins of goop!

Thank got I still live in 1989 and have no idea what any of those are.

About ten years ago I did dabble with 1990, a Honda Civic with a space saver I never had to use it but I guess its better than nothing.

There's cost cutting or 'progress' but no spare is potentially dangerous in my book and don't get me started on drivers who insist on driving at midnight with only there DLR lights on completely oblivious to the fact that the rear lights don't operate unless they actually but the headlight on!

Scott

P.S.

Do any of you still rotate your tyres it was common practice to use the spare as part of the process.

I have both aboard.

Smaller puncture- gloop will do it, and typically will get me to garage that will patch it proper.

But after having a small puncture on motorway, I decided that no matter what car I'll be driving on 5, 10, 15 years- spare will be there. After being "limped to safety" for just over half mile, by traffic officers and police, there was nothing a tin of gloop could do. It was in pieces. If I didn't have a spare already, I would have to be buying one from "mobile tyre shop". And that's isn't cheap.

Echos my needs as well. Mobile coverage is not that good once you are on B and unclassified roads and it takes forever for recovery services.

I will not buy any car which doesn't have a spare wheel, at least as an optional extra.

The goop is unreliable and can't repair all punctures.

I live in a rural part of Scotland and mobile phone signals are very poor. If the goop was unable to repair a puncture I would be stranded. I'm partially disabled and walking to the nearest village or town would be impossible for me. I can replace a wheel at the roadside. so it will always be some sort of spare for me.

I used to 'rustytoba', in order to equalise tyre wear. Problem was, if you did it right you could end up replacing all five tyres at the same time - not good on an apprentice's pay!

I think current wisdom is that once fitted it is not recommended to change the direction of rotation of a tyre, so in theory it would be OK to change front to back but not side to side. Given the (relatively) low cost of a tyre - less than a tankful of fuel - and the sensitivity of some cars to wear rates / patterns, I believe this practice to be of limited benefit today.

Thank you all for your contributions. An interesting range of views, although it does look as if 'Harvey1512' is in a minority of one!

Regards, John.

Quite close to my experience- after limping me (and destroying the tyre in process) to safe bay on M25, copper came to me and told me NOT to change the wheel myself as its side facing traffic, and I'm being watched by CCTV on the post 100 yards away.
Then added (seeing my 8yo daughter asleep on the back seat, 3am Monday, misus in state of panic, slight drizzle from sky) "by law I have to tell you to leave the car and wait behind the barrier. So, I told you and now good luck. AA estimates they'll make it to you in 2 hours".

They made it in 5...

I'll let you guess did any of us leave the car to stand in the rain.

And AA wouldn't take us home either. Only to nearest place to change the wheel for spare. Without it...

Will a full-size wheel fit in the spare wheel well?

I’d love the extra boot space in my C70, particularly when the top’s down!!!

As it is, I have a full size (albeit steel not a matching alloy) spare AND a bottle of gunk.....

As a matter of interest, do Volvo provide a jack etc with cars that just have the gunk?
