Question Eratic Idle - Engine Management light on - Need HELP!

Started today. On driving from cold with a normal start, went to the first roundabout 5 mins and my V40 started to "hunt". When home, checked it over.

Symptoms:
1. The engine fan comes on every 2 mins
2. The car runs fine for 15 seconds then starts to hunt like its running on 3 cylinders like its missing, then it reverts to running normally again in a cyclic pattern - some sort of feedback loop cutting in perhaps?
3. Checked coil packs but there's no electric leaks or the like
4. Disconnected MAF and engine alters so probably not this
5. Disconnected TPS and revs cut out and stalls so maybe not this
6. The thermostat appears fine; engine at correct temp. Air con on and it hunts more though.
7. On the last restart, the engine management light has now stayed on

Not sure if I should be driving it now? Help needed.

Thanks

Sorry, don't have a code reader at the moment. Must get one sometime... One point I did note though, the other day I heard like air bubbles in the dash board? Yes, sounds silly I know... Is this a possibility?

For what it's worth, here in Toronto, you can head to the local Autoparts.ca store and they come right out of the store with their code reader and read 'em off for you...you may find that a store near you offers the same service for free. It's quite handy.

Bubbling in the coolant system is likely an airlock in the coolant system, ive had a similar running problem, it was a blocked injector that was stuck and ive had a fuel system flush done, its helped, when its missing it may be fuel flooding that spark plug, if you dnt find any major probs on full throttle i would say overfueling, or idle control valve

Thanks for the feedback. I had a spod at work say he had the same problem on his Toyota last week so I wondered if its fuel related. However, he's used a different petrol station to me so unlikely this. But he took his car to the local garage and they told him it was the "EGR" which recycles "gases". Costly they told him, so they recommended using "Ultimate" high ron petrol to clear it out and he said this fixed it.

So, questions I have now (wandering going down this rat hole):
Where is the EGR on a V40 and what is it or what's the equivalent component on a V40?

There is no EGR on the Volvo petrol engines. Only the 1.9D and the God Damn It (GDI) have it

Thanks Gatos. Good info. So what does the V40/S40 have instead of an EGR? How does it re-circulate exhaust fumes to adjust engine? Would that be a Lambda feedback loop perhaps?

No gas recirculation on the normal petrol cars at all/. They run smoothly enough as they are. Why ruin them.....

ok, what about an oil "air" valve? Is there a PCV or the like? And where is it? I wonder if some "air" lock occurred in the oil pipe perhaps? Of course could be an injector blocked perhaps.
