Forgot to mention what it cost me, the Amsoil was £107, plastic piping 50 pence, alluminium washer (from Volvo) £1.20 and funnel £2

There is a temperature sensor in the box and the software records how long the oil has been at the max design temp. and issues a warning message when the max oil temp period is reached. The system should be reset when the oil is changed. That's all.

Volvo give instructions to change the oil every 48k or 4 years if you use for towing or taxi work.

I change mine 3 years ago without any problems. (Amsoil) It did improve the gearchange.

I'd switch to a specialist garage that knows what it's talking about if I were you.

Does anyone know the recommended mileage intervals for changing the gearbox oil? I have an '54 plate XC90 2.4 D5 auto with 77k miles on the clock.
thanks

Never if you ask a main dealer, but 4 years or 48,000 miles if you want the box to last, which is what Volvo used to recommend on the original service sheet.

This thread has got me thinking again about doing mine, its at 110K and never been changed, no issues really but just wondering whether or not to do it as we plan to keep the car for a couple of years.

Looking at prices there is a significant variance,

Carlube ATF-U is £24.99 for 5 litres wheras Amsoil is around £65 for 5 litres.

A call to the local toyota dealer confirmed that they sell it for £6.58+VAT a litre so around £40 with VAT for 5 litres

Just wondering if it is worth spending the extra as there aren't any issues at present? Does anyone have any experience of the carlube?

I changed mine earlier this year for the carlube one. I used 3 containers in total. So far done a couple of 1000 miles on it and its much smoother.
I will probably change every 4 years or so. The ATFU mentions the volvo spec as one of the compatible specs.

Once you have issues it will be too late. Your call.

It's about £3500 for a rebuild. Pinching pennies on the servicing wouldn't seem so wise to me. Takes around 7 to 8 liters by the way.

Our D5 has the same jerky take off sometimes, typically while decellerating into a round about down to almost zero speed, and if the accellerator gets pushed too quickly, the gear change is bad!

I have the Volvo Vida Dice system and I do have a intermittent fault on a valve.

The previous owner changed the gear box oil not too long ago. I have only had the car for a couple of months and we have not driven far.

I have really mixed experiences with auto gear box oil being replaced on other cars (especially BMWs with ZF boxes). Failing shortly after replacing (10kkm).
