Clutch/Brake fluid top up confusion.
I've got another daft question, hopefully someone can point me in the right direction !
I bought a 240 Haynes manual and am going through the weekly checks. One of them is to check brake and clutch fluid so I went to Halfords and asked for one of each type of fluid and got brake/clutch fluid combined which I assume is the standard ? Anyway the Haynes manual seems to talk about the brake and clutch fluid reservoir as one and the same, is this the case ? I can see the transparent reservoir on my left at the back when I look under the bonnet is this for both the clutch & brakes ? I'm thinking this might be the case due to the fluid being clutch & brake fluid but please someone tell me if I'm being stupid here. My my mate tells me that the clutch and brakes will usually have seperate reservoirs leaving me confused (This happens a lot). Any help greatfully recieved. Ben |

Clutch/Brake fluid top up confusion.
Your brake fluid reservoir will be evidend as it is attached to the brake master cylinder assembly on the servo unit.
Just next to that and attached to the bulkhead there should be a clutch master cylinder and reservoir. Two separate reservoirs as there are two totally separate systems involved.

Not necessarily. My 93 has no clutch reservoir - there is a flexible pipe from the brake reservoir straight to the clutch master cylinder.
I am not sure which models have this arrangement, but I have seen in on earlier ones. |

My 240 is a 1991 and I've been told they didn't change much over the last couple of years, could it be that I only have the one reservoir also ?

I have run several different models from the 2-series - manual and auto. Admittedly they were older cars. However all the manual ones had two reservoirs, one for each function. You can anly go by what you know so as I have never seen a car with a twinned system I must admit to 'living and learning'.

It could be. If you want to make sure trace the pipe back from the clutch.

The later model 240s used the 740 combined master cylinder for both brake and clutch.

Clutch/Brake fluid top up confusion.
.... and all the 7-series and 9-series I have run were autos so I still haven't seen one! I'll have a look in the breakers next time I am in.

Thanks for all your input on this one, it turns out that it is a shared reservoir for both clutch and brakes as stated by Mike Brace.
I can move on and confuse myself with the next simple task now. Regards Ben |
