Thanks for the input, one of the things I did try was making a backup, however, at the time i didnt notice any read errors at all which the software may have eventually overcome. Still the same problem with the backup of the disc, so I may try it again and this time pay attention to see if there were any errors (although if the PC overcome then, then burned a valid disc I may be wasting my time, worth a try though). The next step will be to get the laser cleaned, if not replaced if at all possible by a local electrical repairman.

Final straw is to get a replacement, however my local Volvo dealer was not too helpfull and could only price a replacement unit at 2,5k, so still looking for anyone with any feedback on where to get a unit from for the £350 mark.

Did you use a dual-layer DVD disc and burner? These discs are bigger than the4.7GB found on regular single-layer DVD.
Are your original DVD discs marked or scratched in any way? If they're clean and in perfect condition it would suggest the problem lies with the disc changer in the boot. See if you can swap a unit from another car to try.
If you need to replace it then do the usual, try eBay or a salvage yard first. Use www.partsgateway.co.uk which will contact a number of specialists for you free of charge.

Yes a dual layer DVD was used and I also set the correct parameters when making the backup. The original disc is clean, although not 100% perfect. I have tried another newer original disc in the player and still the same problem so it probably is the unit.

Thanks for the link to Parts Gateway, I will make an enquiry here, and in the meantime try to borrow a player to make sure.

Hang on here guys.... I have the same problem with the navigation system in my car as mention in most threads earlier. However I manage to get in touch with a Volvo expert in Germany which told me this: if your system will not automatically upgrade or the message "DVD can not be read" there is only one possible reason for that - your bios is shot!! - I had that also one time - you can go to your volvo dealer and have him to install you a software newload over the volvo system Im going to receive the part number for the software upgrade soon so hang out there and I will tell you the outcome asap. Hi again. I've finally got the part numbers for the software that needs to be reloaded onto the RTI system to get the sat nav to work. I have not managed to reload it myself yet since Im working offshore at the moment. Try to reload this software: UPGRADE:30677031
or if that does not work....
RELOAD:9494727
I was told that this would cure the problems. Please let me know if anyone succeed. Reg, Ghostie

Default 'can not read disc' solved!

I had the same problem with the RTI displaying 'this disc can not be read'.

I just had the software updated on the unit by a dealer (had to pay £30 for their time, but sw update was free), but this made no difference.

So as a last resort I removed the DVD unit and opened it up to see if I could clean the lens. It comes apart quite simply with three small screws and you can just see the lens through the mechanism. Using a cotton ear bud and some glasses lens cleaner I cleaned it carefully and after putting it back together it works! Seems the lens had 'fogged' up due to condensation over the last few years and it was enough to stop it reading the disc. In fact on the rear of the unit there is a little bit of corrosion on the steel casing so it must be exposed to some humidity.

Hope this helps someone else with the same problem.

My satnav has started working again randomly. When I start the car in the morning it works for a few mins, comes out the dash and everything is fine, then it flickers and goes off. Sometimes going up and down a few times, some times comming back on for a few more minutes but eventually flickers again thengoes back into the dash. The TV also worked for the first time in months but again, soon goes back into the dash. The head unit still displays TV error and CD error at few second intevals but plays CD's fine.
I am at a complete loss! Anyone else has similar problems?

Tavvy, thanks for your post - you've saved me a fortune. I was having a similar problem with my RTI and Volvo were saying I needed to replace the whole hardware unit. Following your advice, I got the unit cleaned up and it worked!

Hi,
I am a new owner of a S80 2.9 T6 SE on a 98 plate with genuine 46k miles.
This car is immaculate as you can imagine with the low milage. I am trying it out for the next month or so to see if it is better than my current car a bmw 325 individual coupe which i have owned for 4 years
I am replying to this topic as the satnav system sometimes struggles to read the discs that came with the changer.
I have checked the manual and there is no reference to the satnav system so i am at a loss as to why there is a 6 disc changer in the boot and 4 disc up front.
Does anyone know what other types of discs that i can load in the rear and do i have full operational menu on the satnav display?
The satnav discs looked a bit ropey so i did a full copy last night and the new ones work fine but i think the lens needs a clean.
Big apologies if this is elsewhere on the forum.

thanks
Yorkie

volvo parts now do a special cleaning DVD , the brushes are different to the usual cd cleaning disk you get in the shops . Might be worth trying ..
