you probably already have an electric fuel pump in the fuel tank but it wont help the main injector pump work better or worse , I think it just gets the fuel to the injector pump at a low pressure of about 2bar when you start the car up or if the pressure drops in the supply pipe . The main injector pump will pull fuel through on its own in most situations and return excess fuel to the tank for re circulation , the main injector pump works from 300 to well over 1000 bar for common rail which is a tremendous pressure to have lurking under the bonnet . Having said all that if the electric pump or fuel supply lines are giving problems then they really can be a pain , am going through a learning process on fuel supply on my D5 , it started with a failed electric fuel pump but then found problems with pipes in the tank and also probably issues at the engine end which still have to resolve .

No, there is no such thing as a lift pump, or rather there are two parts to the Bosch pump, a low pressure bit that pulls up the fuel and the other bit which presumably operates at 155 bar, the opening pressure of the injectors. There is no added benefit in getting a separate pump as already suggested by Bernard. Should the pump seal require renewal you will know all about it as the car wont run.

now here is another question what if you wanted to run an alternative thicker fuel would a lift pump be applicable in that situation
