Around 80-85 on the motorway, less on the A-roads (the french have lowered the limit to 50 mph). If i was going to stick to 60 i'd have a Defender!!

I always brim to brim my tanks and calculate the MPG. I only use the gauge as a tell-tale as to whether things are getting better or worse...

Anyhow my point is V70/XC70 that I have owned/driven...

2002 V70 163 D5 manual (113k, owned from new by my dad, then my sister, then me) - easy to get over 50 mpg, over 55 mpg on steady A-road runs. I once had it over 60 after a week of steady commutes from Hull to the outskirts of York on the A1079 probably averaging 45 mph.

2005 XC70 163 D5 auto AWD 70k (owned from 3 months old by my dad, then me) averaged 39, could get it to 45 on a steady motorway run.

2008 XC70 185 (but P*'d) auto AWD 100k - my current daily driver - dreadful 32-33 mpg from mostly steady motorway commute. My 2003 XC90 does 1 mpg better...

2013 XC70 215 auto AWD 52k - my dad's current daily driver - can get 42 mpg on a steady motorway run.

The 163 BHP was, by some margin, the most economic and refined of all the D5's. If only it had been available with the 6-speed auto. But in MPG terms - AWD knocks you 3-5mpg and auto a similar amount.

Sadly in the pursuit of lower emission KPI's, modern diesels run at sub-optimal ratios and this perversely reduced MPG. It's the same with new trucks. I remember my first turbo diesel car - 1996 1.9Tdi Passat - would regularly exceed 60 mpg. I could get 62 with a A/C off.

I'd hope you could get 42 mpg - at the 65-70 speeds at which most V70's seem to cruise the motorways (perhaps for this very reason) and ideally with the aircon off, which seems to have a surprisingly significant impact for a large engined car. Certainly its use in the very hot weather walloped my mpg this summer. The very cold winter had the same effect. I'd better make the most of the current sweet spot!

The A/C remains active above 5 degrees unless you turn it off, it uses less power though, the compressor is cycled to keep the evaporator core with prescribed temperatures. The advantage of this is it de-humidifies the air in the cabin which eliminates misting and a few odors.

Carefully driven, I can do 6 l/100 km with my XC70 D5 (230 hp/470 Nm) AWD automatic from 2012. That's about 47 mpg.
The other XC70 will do slightly better, but not much. It's an XC70 D4 (181 hp/400 Nm) AWD automatic from 2016. It has a slightly higher gear ratio.

These values are from the trip computer. It's slightly optimistic. I've checked when refueling.

Average right now is at 7.6 l/100 km for the D5 and 6.7 l/100 km for the D4. The D5 is still coming down from close to 12 l/100 km after a 2000 km trip with 1700 kg caravan behind it this summer. There's a substantial amount of other trailer towing done with the D5 as well.

Our XC 70 gives around 40 mpg on a regular 400 mile a weekend motorway run at eighty ish. If we set the cruise to 70/3 we get a couple more mpg. On the local roads during the week my wife drives it and gets around 32 mpg.
We think that’s acceptable for a car which can get us home if it snows and can carry our three dogs in comfort. It’s a big comfortable fast car. You have to pay the price somewhere.
