Weber carb for 700

I had a facelift 740 on a "G" plate before I got my present 940, it definately had a pierburg carb and that dreadful exhaust gas recirculating valve thing that used to corrode, and, of course, no cat. Well over 250k miles when I sold it. I queried the spec with the local Volvo indi, given the year, he confirmed that "there are a few about".

Yes. Very original low miles car unmolested. Wind up windows and cloth seats. Card is auto-choke Pierburg - pipes and vcuum hoses by the dozen.

Car is '89 on a G plate. Original and unmodified. Pierburg auto-choke, Engine bay looks like an Italian spaghetti factory.
The reason for wanting a Weber was the rough tickover and faltering at low rpm. There do, however, appear to be some problems with the plug leads and after a quick go at repairing the existing ones it ran better. Trying a new set next. Car goes like rocket when the second choke opens. Will still pursue the Weber route as it would give me a manual choke and less pipework, although it will take some figuring out what to with all the stuff that I'll have to disconnect.

May have solved the apparent conundrum of the carb equipped cars with just"740"badging as OldBlue's photo shows.

Volvo, late in 1987 ("E"plate) launched a Special Edition 740, not to be confused with the SE (which was later).

The 745 was badged"740"only and whilst based on the GL, was built to a lower price point hence the carburettor (114bhp), and manual front windows. In order to keep prices down the estate was only available in four paint colours: red, deep red, white and mid blue, all solid colours.

This clearly was a test product for the fleet segment, this Special Edition would finally become the SE, in late 1988 - with a slightly different specification and engine (2.0 injection) and a higher specification than the GL.

Have yet to see it in a brochure though, or price list.

I have an old 740 with a weber carb I put on. I then converted it to Gas and it ran for 50,000 on gas returning the equavalent (in cost) of 66 mpg! The carb is still on it if anyone wants it (or the whole car!) e mail is thepolycroft@btinternet.com

FYI My Dad's 740 has electric front windows and is metallic grey. (2.3 carb, facelift, badged as 740)

FYI my comments are thus far pertinent only to the"original"740 not the facelifted version
