I guess my driving style is normal; I don't red line the car or drive it too hard, but I do enjoy the drive. |

I average 47mpg in my 2017 S60 D4 Geartronic (Daily commute is 75% motorway).I have never owned a D5, but have driven them in courtesy cars and found them fun to drive. I think both the D4 and D5 are capable of very good mpg, but how heavy is your right foot? That makes a big difference.
Reading your posts, is your real question should I buy a higher spec, but slightly older/cheaper car or a lower spec, but slightly newer/more expensive car? How many miles do you do? Will the lower mpg of a D5 cost more than the price difference to the D4 over the life of the car? Is it the toys on the D5 that really attract you...

Not really a great comparison but....
I have a 2012 XC60 D5 AWD Geartronic On a 300Mile Motorway/Major A road run between Newcastle & Newbury I get 38ish indicated mpg on the trip computer. I tend to stick to 70-80mph but occasionally may press on a bit. Around town & commuting to work & back (say 160miles per week) The trip computer drops to around 33mpg. Before the masses jump in & say the computer is hopelessly inaccurate It's a big lump of car, I enjoy the growl of the 5pot & the mountains of torque & I also enjoy the get up & go in Sport Mode. I've always wanted one The Fuel consumption doesn't bother me.

Can't comment on the D4, but we have D5 geartronic, 2013 model, and love it.
Mixed-driving fuel consumption is around 40mpg; on a good run it goes well up into the 40s, especially if my wife is driving. I do not drive my cars unduly hard, but I do enjoy a "good drive" (and the D5 will certainly give you that!) but my wife has an amazingly light right foot and can get the best economy possible out of anything, it always seems... On what's being said here, it sounds as if the differences in mpg should be relatively minimal - do what we did and be swayed by all the goodies as well! David

Thanks guys - good to get some real world input. Sounds like the more exciting option is the D5.
As one poster asked, yes, there is a question underneath the original one I guess (not intentional) in whether the newer D4 is worth the extra over the 'older' D5? The D5 is still low mileage one owner and the attraction is the spec. You can't often find them with all the toys on so I am sorely tempted to give that a go really. |

I ran a V60 D4 for about 36,000 miles and averaged 49.5 mpg (calculated brim-to-brim) over that period, predominantly long trips with a mixture of main roads and motorways. No problems whatsoever with the engine (or the rest of the car, for that matter). Exchanged it 6 months ago for a petrol-engined V40 T5 - space is not critical for me.

Remapped d5 v60 r-des.
170mile motorway (inc a stop at services and stop start traffic on m25 - Friday night m25 anti clockwise) & 40 mile country lane run results in 58-60mpg if driven to the speed limits (maybe just over..). I've achieved this multiple times. Always with 1 passenger, brimmed tank just before I set off and a boot half full.

If you're concerned about the economy figures, I presume you're seeking a manual transmission rather than geartronic?
It will make a significant difference. |

Would you consider a D5 Hybrid (twin engine)? Depreciation makes them reasonably affordable I understand. Mine has done 12000 miles and I am currently averaging 64mpg overall. This is based on a combination of frequent short journeys between 15 and 55 miles and maybe once a month 600 mile round trip combined motorway and city driving.
I charge maybe 3 times a week for local journeys but rarely on long trips apart from pre-departure. Without a charge on long trips I am getting around 45mpg maybe slightly more. Power mode is fun to drive and hybrid setting does most of the rest. Just a thought |
