End of Volvos & car hobby is over
Enough is enough.
Time has come to give up once and for all. This interest and hobby is over. Over the coming days I will be detailing and documenting my failures and my bad choices in the world of cars. Some might relate to these. Will cover dealers , classic cars, eBay , garages mechanics. First let’s start with dealers and mechanics I have had enough of buying older classic more interesting cars from people who are supposed to be specialists and highly knowledgeable recommend in the Volvo world only to be done over. My looks and age definitely play a factor when you look at a car. A skinny short young looking lad you are very rarely taken seriously buy old men at these places. So being done over comes easily. Bough a Volvo from a local north west independent dealer well known only to have multiple suspension issues, power steering leak, strut tower rotting the list goes on. They even old me if I came in looking to sell this rare Volvo to them they would decline ( way I look again ) Weeks ago bought another V70 off eBay. Seller now refuses to accept he ever sold me the car. V5 is out of date, service history is for another car and no Mot certificate. Can’t even tax it because of the V5 issue. Just again and again more screwing over and multiple issues with classic older cars. Moths ago bought another Volvo again had the breaks jam on after a week so needed a rear break overhaul headlight was misty so more money it’s just never ending. This is only my recent failures I could go on. Mechanics are just not interested in doing big jobs. All quick in and out. That’s all they want. Even if they do and I have a few who will , massive bills 750 quid to get a S60 passed a MOT now the P7 tyres which got fitted so the car hopefully drove better have ruined it. The road noise is unbelievable 550 quid down the drain there. 3 mechanics that I use can’t even sort simple stuff all miss ball joints steering arms and just gloss over stuff. All 3 are really are in no better condition just more stuff been replaced. But and this is the point. ONLY BE A CAR ENTHUSIAST IF IF YOUR A MECHANIC otherwise you will be done over. You have to be handy and do all the work with your classics and older cars yourself or you have to rely on mechanics who know you don’t know so they screw you. Some more than overs but all do. I only got into the classics and old stuff 3 years ago. Before then I had new g30s bms , A8 black edition, V90, even a newish 2014 F10 M5 back in 2018 but then I started to like the older stuff so stopped the new and got WHAT A MISTAKE. I even have 1000s worth of parts TURBOS SEATS PCV systems IPD bits steering wheels can belt kits all brand new Volvo parts even for R models and because of the way I have been treated by garages and mechanics and even car groups I’m going to THROW THE LOT INTO THE TIP. Yep even rare bits it’s all going. Serves you all right for the mental health issues I have been suffering with all this Unfortunately I can t get rid of one of the classic cars as someone else is driving it so I can’t but the other two with all the 1000s spend on them will be sent to auction or scraped. I’ll make sure to key them and put sand and water in the engine so they go as non runners so can’t be used. Have few rare Volvo models also all three going in bin. 1/18 auto art 850s! I’m done. Sooner electric cars get rid of old classic stuff the better. Hate the hobby hate it so much. But after tomorrow I’ll be done. Only thing left is march to get rid of the ones in storage. Scrap hopping but I’ll settle damaging them for an auction. Salvage there’s a though ? Good bye. |

Yes there are a lot of scumbags in the world. Doesn’t mean you have to join them. Why don’t you be one of the few rather than one of the many. If you have some good stuff to sell, then just be honest and open, that way, maybe you can at least claw some cash back.

I’m concerned that there’s more to this than classic cars.🧐

A new Forum member and first post - this has got to be a windup! Or, sadly someone who is in desperate need of professional help.
Whichever it is I sincerely hope they manage to get themselves sorted out.

Well I read the title and first couple of paragraphs and thought it may as well be me in my most pessimistic mood writing it, because goodness knows I've thought about giving it all up of late... but then it, erm, escalated?
I will say that if this is real, there's some points in there I do agree with and can relate to, particularly: Quote:
Quote:
All-in I've put £3k into my car in the past few months and the end result is that it's now got lots of new parts but terrible road manners and I feel I've made an enormous error even commissioning some of it. I've lost hours and hours of my working time (i.e. profit) to inspecting and researching things and making return trips to the garage because they messed up. Still got a bad graze on my arm from crawling under the car on a wet morning, just to get photos of the damage the garage did to new parts. It's easy to feel aggrieved and it's certainly a testing hobby that's sometimes decidedly depressing. Maybe the OP has more going on than just cars and it is not right to speculate, but I suspect there are many here and on other forums who have thought about throwing it all in for one reason or another and for most it probably proves best to take a step back and think it through logically in a fresh morning's light.

Is something amiss in the state of Volvo? It concerns me that both 'Eight50' and now 'jbentley', new members both, have apparently each had similar, less than pleasant, experiences with their Volvos. Is this just coincidence, or is indicative of the emergence of an unwelcome trend among the purveyors of 'our' sort of cars.
'jbentley's post also hints at a less than happy experience with car forums. I do hope that does not include ours, as that would be both regrettable and also counter to my own experience over the years. I think that we need to listen to comments such as these and where possible offer the same cordiality and assistance that we both expect and receive. There must surely be a problem here somewhere that moves a forum member to consider taking the actions along the lines described by 'jbentley' in his post. They strike me as counter productive to all concerned, not least in the financial loss involved. He might also incur the wrath of the auction house if they should discover that the cars had been deliberately sabotaged. The whole tone of his post struck me as a desperate plea for help. But to offer such help we would need more information presented in a less emotive way. Regards, John.
