How did you remove the lock assembly from the steering column? Did you have to remove the tamper resistant screws (drilling out or otherwise) or did the part you removed come out with only standard screw or bolt removal?

I chiselled them round to unscrew them. As the bolts turned and the chisel marks were all around the head it made it a little easier. On an M8 thread it's only really practical to use a 4mm stud extractor as the core of the bolt is 6mm that leave a 1mm wall. Any less on the wall thinkness and the stud extractor would expand the wall and actually tighten the screw in the hole

In a post above (#16) you showed two parts which fell out of the lock mechanism. Is the black one either rubber or plastic?
I had proposed using Lock-Ease to lube the ignition cylinder and so to test this I sprayed some into the key-hole on my V70, even though my lock works fine. I thought I sprayed a small amount, but after the application the car sat unused for a couple of days in 40 C temperatures and when I drove it I found a strong odor of petroleum lubricant. I hope I did not get gross excess of hydrocarbon fluid into places and onto plastic parts where it shouldn't be. Hydrocarbon oils can damage certain kinds of plastic or rubber. I got out my shop vac and vacuumed the lock mechanism. I now think only dry graphite powder should be used on these locks.

How much is a new barrel?
This has just happened to my wife's V70! It so frustrating. At first I was unable to get the key past position 1 but after WD40 and a lot of key jiggling the key does turn but it's very stiff. I suspect its the same pin/spring scenario as mentioned earlier.
I need to get this fixed ASAP but as I am not a DIY'er it's going to the garage. Does anyone have any ideas how much this will cost? Does it have to goto a dealer or can my local independent do the job? Any help would appreciated.

Hello hancym
I ran into the same problem as yourself yesterday evening in my 2006 S60. I have just finished putting everything back together, two allen headed bolts this time in case its has to come off again. I removed the small pin as well and lubricated the lock. It seems to be working fine so far. Just wondering if you had any issues with yours since. Thanks Darren |

None whatsoever!!
My 20 years engineering experience tells me that this is just and over engineered lock to placate Volvos safety/Security ethos. As far as I can see the pin must perform some deadlock function on the steering lock bolt. Not having an undamaged one to look at I cant confirm this though. |
