I have seen some very expensive cars - as in high prices asked for what they are - and have more often than not thought that the condition isn't what I'd want for that particular outlay.

I think it is very hard to find true good examples of virtually anything for sale - there's always something - they are after all cars...

Good luck with it and I hope you can cope with the problems.
The seller, a real gentleman, was selling the car on behalf of an older person who could no longer drive, sincerely he was not aware of any problems, absolutely every description was accurate, the undercarriage was not described other than listing whar had been changed, which was a very accurate descriprion. I drove the car today both on the street and on the highway and it’s alright, however it needs work on the undercarriage.
The tires on the car were reported as excellent, and in appearance they were, except that they were 20years old as was discovered during the inspection (by the DOT code) when the seller realised this, he inmediately told me to change them, and he paid for them.
Besides the car transaction, he picked me up at the airport, took and waited for me at the Department of Motor Vehicles, insisted in inviting me for lunch and breakfast. I have made a new friend, definetly I am very comfortable with my purchase, there was no misrepresentation whatsoever.

Where can I find out information on a 544 that they don't know the year. We found the following number it looks like maybe Swedish:
P-54408 A
253773
56
27-156
Does anyone know what they mean?

The first two lines suggest it is an early PV544 between 1958 and 1960 - the A designates the first generation of the PV544

The numbers after the 544 were only used for this first series

The book only recognises 03 04 05 and 06 - the internet shows references to a 08 variation as well but I can't see exactly what trim type it was. If you look at this web page you can see the specifications for the other end numbers =>

https://katterugclub.nl/volvo-pv-544

The 253773 is the chassis number (this also corresponds with the years given above)

The 56 designates "olive green" body colour (see same site linked above for colour codes)

The 27-156 would be the interior trim designation. I can't find any pictures or references to this combination so it is pretty rare (or incorrect!)

P-54408 A = The 8 indicates an American market car. A = 1959 544 Sport B16b with twin carbs
253773 = Chassis number = 1959 range 196005 - 295499
56 = Farg - Colour = Olive Green
27-156 = Upholstery = Light gray and beige. Vertical ribs on door trim with a horizontal silver metalic trim 6-8" up from the bottom of the door.

A-G suffix indicates model years from 1959 to 1965. Model year starts August the previous year so this 1959 car is from the model year that runs from August 1958 to August 1959. This chassis number means that it came off the line somewhere about June 1959.

I have just bought a PV544 and the V5 tells me it was manufactured in 1966 and it has a D registration but I thought production stopped in 1965.

The chassis plate says: Type 544-11244 C

Chass 358749

Paint 67-1

Trim 39-196

From one of the replies above this may be a 1961 car. Would that be correct?

Cheers Richard

My 1964 Pv544 has chassis no. 417406, so presumably yours was made earlier.
Maybe it was imported here in '66, when age related numbers didn't exist.
