No 3rd gear in AW 55-50SN gearbox
No 3rd gear in AW 55-50SN gearbox 2003 S60 T5
The car had the old radiator oil cooler failure which has been replaced a while ago the gearbox was also flushed and appeared to be okay for a while now when you drive it it shifts well from 1st to 2nd and then 3rd the revs just go up if you put it into the tiptronic and select from 3rd to 4th it gets 4th and then 5th but as soon as you select or the box selects 3rd it just revs is it repairable or is it the case of a good second hand auto box as the rebuild will probably make it beyond economical repair Any advice would be greatly appreciated as its a nice car Thanks Andy |

If someone has removed the screw plug on the top of the transmission under the mistaken belief that this was a fill port for ATF, then this would release one of the bands and one of the gears would be lost (3rd gear, I think). If this is the case, there is a procedure for recovering the band without opening up the transmission.
ATF is added down the transmission dipstick tube. However, I don't know how to tell if a missing 3rd gear would be due to that. If you do remove the plug on top to see what the situation is, then the band would be released. But if the 3rd gear has ever worked after a point in time from which you know that the plug had not been removed, then I don't think that would be the cause.

Sounds 100% like someone has done an ATF change and decided that nice big bolt on the top of the box (3rd gear anchor bolt) looks like a great fill plug - DOH! Yes, if the cause of the 3rd gear failure is because of the 3rd gear anchor bolt then this is recoverable and a relatively easy but slightly fiddly fix. Do a search on here for 3rd gear anchor bolt and hopefully you'll find plenty of info on the subject along with directions on how to repair/recover 3rd gear. Of not then post back here in this thread and I'll find the posts that I know of. |

Looking for the couple of threads that should be on here but in the mean time get your reading glasses on and have a look at this thread on another forum. It actually details everything you need to know but it is a fair old read (well worth reading all IMHO).
LINKY! Have a read of this thread too off of here (a few pics are no longer though). LINKY! Last edited by SonyVaio; May 28th, 2014 at 19:08. |
