Default synthetic motor oil

hey guys,
I have been told to change the oil that I use in my motor over to synthetic mobil 1 oil which supposedly is better for the engine. I really have never studied engine oil all that far in depth, so, is synthetic motor oil ok to put in my car having 121,000 miles on it? I vaguely remember something about synthetic motor oil being better for new engines... is this correct?

Thanks for all your help.

Hi ya,

Its never to late to convert, just on an old engine there can be problems with oil seals failing.

You need to flush the engine through with a flushing agent before the changeover. Another trick which i haven't tried but i know works is put gearbox oil in a run with that for a few days.

Next change to your oil of Mobil 1(which i personally use) or another quaility brand. Run with this for about 3k miles then change it again. This is to make sure no old sludge is or may be remaining in the engine or pan, it may take a few changes.

Keep an eye on your engine over the changeover period in case one of your seals as gone hard and the synthetic as found a weak point to leak through. It sounds worse than it is but best to keep a check.

Lastly is, if you haven't already done it change the rubber seal on the oil cap, it will probally leak here if any, i change mine every 2 years say.

If you visit also www.brickboard.com there are several topics on this. Another site run by Volvo Mechanics is www.volvospeed.com if you would like further reading. www.volvospeed.com/volvospeed.htm

Hope this helps.

850's use semi-synthetic oil anyway, so going straight to full synthetic shouldn't be a problem (it wasn't on my T5 anyway... and that had done a shade over 200k (miles) when I got it (ex-plod)

On other cars that are using mineral oil currently it is advisable to run on semi-synthetic for one oil change, as going straight for full synthetic results in oil seperating and emulsions forming (not too good for lubrication anyway)
