I get many cars in for their test-quite a few of them Volvo's - where the ball has separated from the socket. The owners have no idea and say they didn't notice any difference at all in the handling...some do say that an annoying clunk they had went away by itself a few weeks earlier....
To me, replacing perfectly serviceable parts is a waste of time and money, and have seen many cases of aftermarket parts failing within a year of being fitted, after the OE part doing its job perfectly for 5 years or more. Your car, your choice. How many would replace a pair of 6mm tyres because you got a puncture in 1? Or a CV joint because of a small hole in a gaiter? Brakes are a given, and 90% of the time with shocks and springs, but otherwise I'd advise according to the age and condition of the parts rather that just a blanket "keep both sides the same". P.S- It's amazing how easy it is to nip a boot when fitting a drop link or ball joint, especially a cheap ebay replacement. In this case a brand new just fitted part would fail the MOT again.
