as it happened, the item is unsold at the initial asking price - which would tend to suggest that:
in the current economic climate a few weeks before christmas it is priced out of the current market. I'm sure if he waits till the spring and improves his ebay listing that his car will get a lot closer to what he is looking for

However, if you want unrealistic i'm suprised no one has picked up on this:
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1979-VOLVO-244...item35ad9c5556 £8 grand - and reduced at that..... lets look at it - Well, it is in very good condition and has a show pedigree but it is the Auto model and early 244 Autos had a horrible rear axel ratio returning crazy revs at modest motorway speeds and terrible fuel economy. It's also a DL and has the square headlights and lacks the chrome wing mirrors.I may be wrong but I don't ever recall seeing 2 tone seats in a DL and the carpet colour looks odd as does the faux wood strip on the dash. Yes, its a nice car but i had a nicer 244 Auto from 1978 which I sold last year for around £1000 having paid around £1000 for it - from a VOC member to another VOC member Am I being discourteous to the vendor or dishonest - no I'm not - and if someone interested in buying it checks on here first and sees my comments, as an owner and buyer/seller of these vehicles then great! I've done him a favour!

I have to agree, I reckon it's about 500 quid over what it should be. I don't think there is anything wrong with discussing the price of "our" type of cars, and if nothing else it's also drawing attention to the car which could result in a sale shoudl someone decide it IS worth the asking price.
(not to me, I'd want a mint GLT with LPG for that sort of dosh) |

Having gone through the experience of bringing my 240 from a £250 banger up to a presentable and useable car (certainly not show/mint/pampered), IMO £1950 is not an unreasonable amount of money for a low mileage example in good condition and unusual colour - after all, black ones are probably the rarest.
It will be interesting to see if the 244 finds a buyer at that price. i think its a beautiful car but for me, the interior limits its value. It is obviously not original and its highly unusual design will reduce its marketability. Having seen it up close, I couldn't live with it, but someone else will love it for its novelty factor. I don't see any harm in expressing an opinion on the price of cars on sale. Petulant foot stamping and back and forth 'I am right and you are wrong' is pointless as they are just that, opinions. Prices for second hand cars vary wildly and whether we feel they are too low or too high is largely subjective. What might be too expensive for one person is a bargain to someone else. Sellers are also perfectly entitled to ask what they want for their cars and that should be respected in our views in what is after all a public forum. Speculation that a car is clocked for example, is as 940 Turbo put it, discourteous and also defamatory and I would have thought this forum would be a little more generous to a fellow Volvo owner. I hope both these sellers eventually find buyers and that the cars go to a good homes as they have obviously been well loved.

I think it is fine to post up for sale ads and discuss one's personal view on an offer in the public domain - however, that shouldn't imply, accuse or humiliate any seller who is fully entitled to place their valuation on their car, especially if the commentator hasn't viewed it. Nor do I think that any ensuing communal discussions should infer or imply a notion of 'market value' applied to each unique sale, for fear of hinderance or embarassment to the future owners.
Of course we here are all interested in a 'market value' - but I'm sure we all realise that such a concept barely exists in the real world, especially when one factors in passion, scarcity and such varying levels of condition in 20 year old cars! How might a rational discussion go in this case: http://www.carandclassic.co.uk/car/C163667/ |
