When I did my petrol filter, I didn't stop the flow, I just did it quickly!

In order to stop the flow it is recommended to have a low tank of diesel - about a quarter tank. Or get a hose clamp that is used for fuel and brake lines and pinch it off going into the filter assembly. That is what i did or else fuel will run out the whole time. On my 04 model it was a paper filter that went into the plastic insert. Unscrewing it isn't easy and ended up using an oil filter chain wrench which did mark the outside of the housing.

One of these will do the trick to release the housing - no damage
