Default S40 Gearbox Problems

Problems with S40 1.6XS(1999), 70,000 miles. Had this car now for 6 years without any problems, however several months ago i started having problems selecting reverse and 1st gear. I put the car into a local garage where they replaced the gear link bushes which were found to be worn. Car then worked perfectly for about 2 weeks then the same problem returned, the garage adjusted the gear selector and once again problem was fixed only to return 1/2 weeks later. This has now been going on for about 2/3 months. I got fed up and gave another garage a go where they stripped down the linkage, cleaned it and put it back together once again fixing the problem only for it to return after a week. This garage have adjusted it and it is working fine for the moment (only 3 days so far) but they are at a loss as to what is causing this apart from to keep adjusting it until it works (free of charge, so they are not ripping me off!) or the last resort will be to send the gearbox for inspection.

Anyone got any ideas or heard of this problem before?

Have a look through the "SEARCH" function, i vaugely recall some advice re a locking nut on the transmission which when not fully torqued caused selection problems, also the bushes as you mentioned and the selector arm on the transmission is often stripped relubed and refitted.

If you have all these confirmed then it would indicate something more fundamental and internal which may require transmission removal. Hopefully not.

Best of luck.
