Default Winter Tyres - Believe the Hype!

Just fitted 2 Pirelli winter tyres to the front of my 'ahem' Toyota. Wow, what a difference!

I'd really considered some snow socks but decided to bite the bullet and go for fresh rubber.

Acceleration and general stability is much improved as is braking, sure the back feels a little mobile in comparison but it's still running Bridgestone summer tyres.

Anyone else fitted them to their Volvo? (or any car for that matter)

Is it stable with Winters on the front and Summers on the back?

Apparently... that can cause unforeseen rotation issues at speed!

If you drive like an idiot then there could be. Unfortunately most of the population thinks the can fit winter tyres and be able to hammer into roundabouts at 50mph with no issues. Drive to the conditions then no problem.

If I still had my T5 then fitting 4 would be the way to go, as it is the Yaris is a lightweight, any rear end naughtiness is easily sorted by keeping the front end pointing in the desired direction and using a bit of throttle.

I've got two winters on the back of my 740 and summers still on the front. The difference is certainly noticeable. Well worth the £30 I paid for them too (part worn from the local scrapyard).

No stability issues so far, which is expected I guess as I've made it more stable.

I've got a set of Vredestein Snowtrac3 on my 940. Totally transformed the car in snow, slush, ice and cold damp roads. It now seems to go anywhere - hill starts on 6 inches of snow are no problem now. Well worth the dosh and they totally live up to the hype.

i wish they would make studded tyres legal here, I was out in stockholm one night in an 855 turbo, and there was thick snow/slush/ice on the roads, and he was driving like it was smooth tarmac, that was wet.

unbelievable grip! Same when i went out in a V70mk3 In Trondheim, Norway once upon a time.

But for next year, i'll deffo be buying some winter tyres for my everyday car!

Studded tyres are legal but only if the conditions warrent them (either snow or prolonged minus temperatures). So you'd be changing them every week in UK unless there is a serious long bout of snow/ice...which from what I here, there is right now! It would be nice to have a set in the garage to put on when it gets really nasty out My god the looks you'd get doing 70mph on snowbound motorways lol

Studded tyres are brillaint, but then you need 25 litres of tar remover for the paint work .. and when everybody uses them keep your distance. Screenwash doesn't remove melted tar but its a cheaper option than body repairs. My vote is for winter tyres not studded. Roads are rubbish enough already !
