Default Petrol flap not locking.

Just noticed today that my petrol cap does not lock, obviously the pin (for want of a better description) is not coming out of it's little hole and locating through the flap. Is this a common thing and how easy is it to fix guys?

cheers

There is a factory set 10 minute delay on the lock. Lock the car and check it after 10 minutes and it'll most likely be locked. The right person can remove the delay.

Thanks for the quick reply Dan, but it's not that, it's deffo not locking at all. I'm not too bothered really as it doesn't flap about when driving, i've even thought of putting a small pair of magnets in there. Is it hard to change the mechanism do you know bud?

A common issue is that the fuel flap hinge breaks. 10 minute job to replace and it keeps the flap closed under spring tension, the way it should be. If the solenoid isn't activating to push the locking pin through the flap, it's a bit more hassle to sort out. You may need a new locking mechanism. Cheap enough from a breakers yard. I haven't fitted one of these personally, but there was a thread on here about replacing the fuel flap solenoid/motor, and it didn't look too difficult to do.

This happened to mine only mine got stuck closed.

Just pulled back the side lining and could manually slide the pin back to unlock it. Apparently the internal gears of the unit need lubricating etc.

Can't be bothered to take it apart so will just buy a locking fuel cap.

If you do, use rare earth magnets, they are very strong. (neodymium magnets) they are very cheap.

I had this problem on my v70. I just threaded some rubber through the hole were the pin goes in the fuel flap and it keeps it from opening when driving and opens easily.

Do use a locking petrol cap if you use the magnet method...to fill the tank in the UK currently costs around £95 (≈ $150) from total empty :-(
